CBS: Conservatives realize Bush years hasn’t worked out that well for their ideals

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/01/politics/main2529835.shtml

<snip>

David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union and the key organizer of the CPAC event, told reporters that while nearly everyone at the conference are clearly affiliated with and work through the Republican Party, “there has always been a question of, how do you do that without just being relegated to the back of the bus and taken for granted?”

When conservative author and direct-mail guru Richard Viguerie addressed the conference Thursday morning, he made a point of congratulating organizers for not inviting the chairman of the Republican National Committee to speak – something that has been done in years past. Keene said the reason RNC General Chairman Mel Martinez was not included in the program was not meant to send any message. Martinez had not yet been elected to the post last month when the schedule was firmed up. Still, Viguerie’s glee signaled how far conservative activists want to stay from the party establishment at this point in time.

Keene indicated that conservatives were weary of being taken for granted. “What you see now,” he told CBSNews.com, “is a reaction to Bush and the congressional leadership over the last few years, where there was always a reason to say, ‘well, we need to go along with this because these are our guys.’” Keene indicated that relationship hasn’t worked out that well for conservative ideals. “Pretty soon, incrementally, you do all that and you wake up one morning and not only does it turn into a political disaster but it wasn’t all that good” for conservatives. “How do you influence without being co-opted or being so outside you can’t? It’s a balancing act.”

3. Oh, but after last November's elections, I heard many "mainstream" news sources...
Edited on Fri Mar-02-07 09:58 AM by KansDem
...say that the Dem win was due to numerous individual scandals in the GOP Congress. And I thought "yeah, right...it's all about the lying Bush and his cabal of thugs and cutthroats!"

But, I'm happy to hear that some media whores are finally waking up...as if it's the morning after, to discover that Bush left them too little cash on the nightstand...

edited for spelling...

4. The poor conservatives have to sit in the back of the bus
Why its virtual slavery. They are and their cohort christians are just so persecuted in America. Its hard to figure out how they could find a venue for their tribute to hate let alone fund it.

Me thinks their continuing irrelevance is caused by the mere power of erosion of truth. Not too long ago, the good christian conservatives believed the sun revolved around the earth. And today they continue to think that they are people of love and humanity.

5. The most interesting question, and one that progressives need to ask themselves also,
“How do you influence without being co-opted or being so outside you can’t? It’s a balancing act.”

7. And they always say Democrats don't have any ideas...
While that, of course, is not true, I would rather have no ideas than horribly disastrous ideas.

15. Bingo ...
"conservatism" boils down to an stunningly simple minded, one dimensional view of the world where they claim exclusive advocasy for the base attributes that ALL americans share, with NO acceptance of what lies in the REAL world ...

Frankly, I don't want to hear SHIITE about these morons saying Bush isn't one of them ... 6 years ago, these simps were ONE HUNDRED PERCENT behind this clown, saying HE was their guy, unequivicobly ...

That they backed this clown, totally mind blocking out the CLEAR indications that he was a disater waiting to happen, indicates how childlike they are ...

I have said it before, and I stand by it ... ANYONE who voted for this guy the first time should not be allowed to vote until they pass a civics test, ANYONE who voted for him twice should not be allowed to vote again because they are too dangerous to be trusted to vote ...

10. When the reason you support a policy is ...
"because they are our guys", you toss all of your credibility out the window.

13. Conservatism is so outside the main stream yet these fools will never understand that.
The reason the wing nuts get marginalized all the time is because they are nuts and so are their ideals. Most people do not want to be governed by conservative ideology. One big problem the right has is the conservative talk shows that play on their prejudices day after day and lead them to believe the leadership cares about their issues when the leadership really only cares about increasing its own wealth. The rank and file are needed to win elections and that is all they are needed for.

Conservatism is really a sham.
