I remember him well from the days when Miami channel 7 went from the venerable hometown station WCKT to "if it bleeds it leads" WSVN. WSVN was actually the prototype of all that came after. And Rick Sanchez was the posterboy for this type of sleaze news.
Here's an interesting article about Sanchez from a few years back
"He hasn't lost that signature assertiveness . . . Sanchez doesn't interview; he interrupts. Most important, he still shares his politics, which run just to the right of Pinochet, every eight seconds or so. As a Cuban-born refugee who came to South Florida as a child, he still burns with expatriate passion -- something that corporate cable news apparently can't steal away. . .
He gave the commencement speech at Ramapo College, a small school in New Jersey. Unfortunately, most of the graduates left early to commence partying, according to a May 23 article in the Bergen County Record. Also on a down note, Sanchez said during the speech that his first-grade teacher labeled him mentally retarded. 'I swear to God, it's right there in my transcript,' he told the depleted crowd. . .
That Sanchez may well be mentally challenged puts all the criticism of him in a new light. It's mean, really. People seem to get their kicks from pointing out his more embarrassing gaffes, like the time he accidentally called Jesse Jackson 'Mr. Sharpton.' A peeved Jackson tried to correct Sanchez but was cut off by a commercial break. Some nitpickers took umbrage when Sanchez referred to the two D.C. sniper suspects, John Muhammad and Lee Malvo, as 'these two gentlemen,' but I think he was just being polite. And it's hard to forget the time he called Texas Republican Dick Armey, then-House majority leader, 'Dick Leader Armey.'"

SANCHEZ CHARGED, WILL STAY ON AIR
BYLINE: BY DON VAN NATTA JR
Miami (Fla) WSVN-Channel 7 news anchor Rick Sanchez will maintain regular on-air work schedule, despite recent charge of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident; station says it 'stands behind him'; Sanchez declines comment (S)"

Of course, since he was big buddies with the Metro-Dade police back from the days he used go out at night - with tie dramatically loosened - to report from "the street" on all the meyhem going on -- "Look, you can see the blood right there! -- he got to go home and then claim he did so only to get his license. He claimed the alchahol level in his blood was from AFTER he hit the guy, when he took a drink to calm his nerves.
Talk about the nerve of the guy!
"St. Petersburg Times
A Miami television anchorman has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in a December accident in which police say he left the scene after hitting a man and returned later.
Rick Sanchez, anchor for WSVN, was charged Friday with one count of DUI, a first-degree misdemeanor in the Dec. 10 accident outside Joe Robbie Stadium, prosecutor Kathleen Hoague said.
If convicted, Sanchez faces a maximum of six months in prison and a $500 fine.
A blood test showed Sanchez had a blood-alcohol level that night of .15 percent. A person with a .10 level is considered legally drunk in Florida.
The man Sanchez hit was critically injured and remains in a coma at North Shore Hospital.
Ms. Hoague said Friday that she thinks Sanchez was driving drunk at the time of the accident, but prosecutors decided not to charge him with causing bodily injury while driving drunk, a third-degree felony."

To this day leaving a Dolphins game you'll here people yell, "watch out it's Rick Sanchez" when they hear a car tire screech.
I could on and on about this piece of dirt. Oh what a loathsome human being (?).
