Some Electoral History
Edited on Sat Apr-26-08 07:08 PM by terrell9584
And the first election in which we began to have the modern party system begin to surface was the election of 1828, when the D-R's split, and where the Jacksonian faction, calling itself the D's, won. Since then, elections by digits in which the year ends

0's: 1840-W, 1860-R, 1880-R, 1900-R, 1920-R, 1940-D, 1960-D, 1980-R, 2000-R
2's: 1832-D, 1852-D, 1872-R, 1892-D, 1912-D, 1932-D, 1952-R, 1972-R, 1992-D
4's: 1844-D, 1864-R/NU, 1884-D, 1904-R, 1924-R, 1944-D, 1964-D, 1984-R, 2004-R
6's: 1836-D, 1856-D, 1876-R*, 1896-R, 1916-D, 1936-D, 1956-R, 1976-D, 1996-D
8's: 1828-D, 1848-W, 1868-R, 1888-R, 1908-R, 1928-R, 1948-D, 1968-R, 1988-R

Years ending in 0: R 6, D 2, W 1
Years ending in 2: D 6, R 3
Years ending in 4: R 5, D 4
Years ending in 6: D 6, R 3
Years ending in 8: R 6, D 2, W 1

The Whigs never managed to win for multiple terms. Jackson was the last President to win two terms until Lincoln. In general two consecutive term presidencies have worked out as follows, (in the Jackson and post-Jackson era)

Jackson: 1828-1836, followed by D
Lincoln: 1861-1865, not counted because assassinated, and VP was part of opposition party
Grant: 1868-1876, followed by R
McKinley: 1897-1901, not counted, assassinated
Roosevelt: 1901-1909, followed by R
Wilson: 1913-1921, followed by R
Coolidge: 1923-1929, not counted because of how he came to office
Roosevelt: 1933-1945, died in office, not counted.
Truman: 1945-1953, followed by R
Eisenhower: 1953-1961, followed by a D
Johnson: 1963-1969, not counted, because of when he came to office
Nixon: 1969-1974, not counted, because of how he left office
Reagan: 1981-1989, followed by R
Clinton: 1993-2001, followed by R
Bush: 2001-, unknown who follows at present

A few things.

The only "2" election in which the Democratic Party has retained the presidency while holding the office is the election of 1832. In every other "2" election they won, they were the party out of power.

Every single time that the Democratic Party has won an election in a year ending in "2", it has proceeded to win the following election in the year ending in "6"

The Republicans have never lost an "8" year election when they were the incumbent Presidential party.

The only three times in history where the party that won in an "0" election did not hold the Presidency for a minimum of 12 years are the Whigs from 1840, Republicans in 1880, and Democrats in 1960. By converse, the "0" year party has held the White House for a consecutive period of 24 years once, Republicans in 1860. The periods in which the "0" year party held the Presidency for 12 years exactly are the Republicans in 1900, The Republicans in 1920, the Democrats in 1940 and the Republicans in 1980.

Every single time that the Republican Party has managed to elect a President in a year ending in "0", they also managed to elect a President in the year of that decade ending in "8". There has been no exception to this rule in American history. The only time the Democrats have won "8" elections post 1828 were in decades was in the election of 1948

The Democrats have never won an inelection in a year ending in "8" when they were the opposition party. The Republicans have only won two elections in years ending in "2" when they were the party in power. 1872 and 1972. The Democrats have an equally abysmal record at winning years ending in "2", only maintaining the Presidency as the incumbency party in 1832.

Every time that the Democrats have won a Presidency in a year ending in "0", they have won in the year ending in "4"

Not counting the election of 1828, the Democrats have only won one election in which they were the out

The only oddly numbered decades in which Republicans were in power for the majority of the decade were the 1870's and the 1950's. The only even numbered decades where the Democrats were in power for the majority of the decade, were the 1940's and the 1960's. The Whigs only held the majority for one decade, the 1840's

One more thing, both Presidents elected in a year ending in 60 were assassinated and were replaced by their VP's, who were both named Johnson

This is not something in favor of any campaign or position, just looking at some historical things.
