Olmert throws Bush under the settlement expansion bus
Olmert throws Bush under the settlement expansion bus
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/23/AR2008042303128.html?hpid=topnews

Ehud Olmert makes public a claim that President Bush personally delivered a letter that "gave the Jewish state permission to expand the West Bank settlements that it hopes to retain in a final peace deal, even though Bush's peace plan officially calls for a freeze of Israeli settlements across Palestinian territories on the West Bank."

The US denies this is in the intent of the letter, but, to me, it's far more interesting that Olmert chose to deliver this so publicly and intentionally. He's choosing to undermine US credibility.

1. He's choosing to undermine US credibility.
Not there is that much left to undermine, but something this unethical would have been a Watergate level reason for impeachment back in the day.

2. Yeah, that was my thought.
He appears to be willing to discredit and piss off Bush. This has the potential to get messy.

6. Now George W gets the "Jimmy Carter" treatment
For George W. Bush to give them such a letter is abominable. Not only do the settlements violate international law, but Bush has once again destroyed US credibility as an honest broker.

Not surprising, of course, but this President's missteps are so baffling it really is just hard to believe.

It was just a matter of time before the Israeli government decided George W. was of no further use to them and dragged him through the mud. After all Jimmy Carter did for that country and they won't even offer him security against assassination within their own country? When will the U.S. Presidents wake up? Israel is NOT our 51st State. They have their own agenda and it often conflict with our own.

7. This is funny stuff
Edited on Thu Apr-24-08 10:58 AM by Hydra
U.S. and Israeli officials privately argue that Israel has greatly restricted settlement growth outside the settlements it hopes to retain in a peace deal with the Palestinians, and Olmert has said Israel has stopped building new settlements and confiscating Palestinian lands

"Hey, we stopped stealing your land, and now we're only doing it in the place we want to keep." Ya, that'll work! :sarcasm:

Am I the only one stunned at how little everyone in the world is even PRETENDING to follow rule of law?

8. i love this quote from the article:
National security adviser Stephen J. Hadley, at a news briefing in January, suggested that Bush's 2004 letter was aimed at helping Sharon win domestic approval for the Gaza withdrawal. "The president obviously still stands by that letter of April of 2004, but you need to look at it, obviously, in the context of which it was issued," he said.

in other words, y'all know that we say whatever is politically expedient regardless of how true it may or may not be. it reminds me of gw the day after the elections when he fired rumsfeld. just the day before he swore that rumsfeld was his sec of defense for good. when he was asked why did he lie, he said there was an election coming up.

they don't even pretend to respect the truth.
