How much does it cost to fill the tank of your primary

drive-to-work car per week?

And approximately how many miles do you have to drive round trip to the office every day?

I'll go first:

*****I'm puting in between $48.00-$52.00 to fill up every week, or about $200 per month. :wow:

*****Unfortunately, I have to drive about 40 miles round trip from the suburbs into the city to my office.

SAN FRANCISCO
Gas prices are posted at a Shell gas station in San Bruno, Calif., Monday, April 21, 2008. Retail gas prices hit another milestone Monday, tightening the squeeze on drivers by jumping to an average $3.50 a gallon at filling stations across the country.

I drive 25 miles round-trip to work, but I work 12-hr shifts so I'm only at the plant 3.5 days per week on average. In addition to that, I put about 1,000 miles per month on my car driving up north to visit my family, go out and about, see friends, etc. I average 33 mpg combined city/highway driving.

So, I drive about 1200 miles per month. That works out to 36 gallons per month, or ~9 gallons per week. At $3.50/gal, I'm putting in $31 per week.

Even with a subcompact, I'm starting to notice the pump pain though. I have to really watch where I drive from now on (more so than usual, that is).

3. I still spend about 20/month on gas. I don't drive much at all, and could
drive a hell of a lot less if I wanted to.

In fact, I'm planning on doing that.

4. Austin Texas area here
it takes about $31 to fill my tank at $3.35 per gallon. And I live about 25 miles from my employer. Rant: There is no bus service on the west side of Austin! High falutin' suburbs, ya know. To take the bus would mean a commute of about 2+ hours, with me walking the final two miles. Get this, bus service providers: not everyone works downtown! Check out loop 360 at rush hour(s) sometime.

Oh, and the good news: I drive a prius that I bought last year.

7. Zero miles
Live and work/shop is other side of door. Its boring and I keep two vehicles. Have to drive at least 8 miles rt to get food. Gasoline was priced at $3.899 at the Clark station yesterday and thats the cheap gas. Fill-up is at least $50 and I get something like only 22 mi/gal. Got a bicycle recently that I plan to start using for some of the trips to Costco.

driving 41 miles rt, per day. I bought an '06 Cobalt last July because of the touted 350 plus miles per tank...doesn't happen. But then, most of our driving is in town.

10. It costs me appproximately $35 to fill up from 1/4 tank.
I drive 30 miles round trip to work and maybe another 10 on the weekend for shopping. I fill up once a week. I have a Ford Taurus station wagon that is not really too good on gas. Fortunately, I can afford the gas (at least, for right now).

14. Filling up costs the blood of innocent people slaughtered in a senseless oil war
That's something we should all remember while we're bitching and moaning about the inconveniences we have to "endure."

BTW, the answer to your question is that it's five miles round trip to my office. I usually ride a bike unless it's raining or I'm feeling lazy. I'm not sure how much it costs to fill up the Jetta that I share with others since I only do that on rare and special occasions.

I telecommute quite a bit, but it's 60 miles round trip to visit my mom once a week.

Hell, at this rate, I'm just thankful to have a job, no matter the gas cost.

18. The wifes is 3 miles round trip, mine is a big zero
and it cost north of 60 bucks to fill her explorer but thats not every week. I know but we purchased the explorer long before gas broke the 1.00 barrier and we have no plans to ever get rid of it totally as it is so good on ice and snow as its all wheel drive. Our plan for next summer is to buy something that gets way better mileage, she says she wants a hybrid. So a hybrid it'll probably be. one of our friends has a honda hybrid and although he drives like a bat out of hell, as much as the little car will let him that is, he still gets 40+ mpg. A lady lady bought the first smart car to be purchased here in ok and thats what I think would be a good choice for us as we very seldom ever drive further than 30 miles from home. the Th!nk is another option I like the looks of

22. My bride's ride is 3 miles RT and mine's a big fat zero also.
But, before I started my web-based business a year ago, I was driving up to 150 miles RT to construction projects 6 days a week. At the time, it cost nearly $50 to fill up and that wouldn't last the week. Now it would cost me $100 per week in fuel alone! That doesn't count all the other expenses like vehicle maintenance, coffee and a danish for breakfast, and other commuter-related expenses, mostly from conveniences. For instance, I used to chew gum or munch on sunflower seeds while I worked.

So, though I took a major cut in pay to become semi-retired from the union, it works out that I'm only losing just a couple hundred bucks per month on my net income. And I get to work in my PJs!

19. So Much For That Summer Driving Tour...
I'm fortunate to work from home and my 5-Speed '03 Nissan still can crank out 25MPG or better...I fill up once a month, my wife's car also does 25MPG and limits her driving these days. My son is the one who is hit hardest. He drives 60 miles roundtrip to school and his $15-20 fill ups are now $35-$40...which mom and dad now pick up the price of. We're in an area with little to no public transit...and the little that is available doesn't go where we travel or at the times we need to. Many of my neighbors are really feeling the strains...the guy across the way has been trying to sell his Dodge truck and now rides around in a Toyota.

The prices have affected me in other ways. I travel regularly on business, but this is becoming "cost-prohibitive". If its not the poor service of the airlines, its now the rising ticket prices that are cutting down on where I go and when. Many of us now burn up phone time rather than air miles.

Also, I see a crunch coming this summer...people will be staying closer to home or not taking vacations at all. This will devestate many small communities that have grown to rely on the summer driving season as a major revenue source. Ironically, this was the year our family planned to travel to Europe. No way now. We're discussing not taking one at all this year...and I get a feeling we're not the only ones.

20. No gas tank on my bicycle
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 08:27 AM by gratuitous
So that's zero. It's a 15 mile round trip. However, since April has been doing its best imitation of early December this year, I've only ridden in twice a week, and I take the bus the other days.

Anyway, Straight-Talkin' Johnny Maverick's gas tax holiday proposal would save you about $2.16 per fill up on your weekly $48 bill - that's nearly nine dollars a month! Isn't he a sport? And of course, all the roads and bridges in your area are in pristine condition, I'm sure, so in exchange for that $9 a month, you wouldn't mind watching your local transportation infrastructure crumble a little more. The alternative is you could ride share one day a week to save $9, but that's tantamount to socialism, so that's right out.

I'd say you're stuck.

21. I bought a 50cc motor scooter that gets 100 mpg
so my gasoline cost is about $3.50 a week for that. I only use my car when it rains or to drive 40 miles to visit a friend with bad arthritis every other week or so - I fill up my car once every third week or so for about $32.00.

The other thing I did was move in town from way in the hinterlands after my son graduated from high school so my overall mileage is WAY less and I'm semi-retired and do the work I do from my home.

That tank will last me 2 weeks, assuming I just drive to work and back, picking up groceries on the way home, and stay home on weekends.

It's a 27 mile round trip per day.

27. I work from home, so commuting costs are zero.
I just paid almost $66.00 to fill up.

I drive for work when I have to be at clients' offices. Sometimes a few times a week at maybe a 50 - 75 mile round trip. Other times, its weeks between such trips. I use mass transit as much as possible.

Most of driving of late is hauling tools and materials to a house I am repairing. That's about a 20 mile round trip.

and I get between 1/4 and half a tank. I drive very little; I live in a small town and drive to work, do the errands in one trip then drive back home, probably 5 miles total. Driving to the local gas company, electric company and phone co is no more, I have the bank pay the bills for me.

33. I'm retired and drive to everything I need pretty close by (about 1 mile)
I go to Boston to see my grandkids once a month. But still, I fill up for under $40 every 2 to 3 weeks. I just found out that being retired gets me a discount on my car insurance! That helps.

We live in New Haven, which has good public transit. Hubby takes the bus to and from work every day. He likes it because he hates traffic and paying high prices for parking. AND he hs developed bus buddies which makes his 20 minute ride enjoyable.

I carpool with my other retired friends whenever possible. My supermarket gives a coupon for 10 cents a gallon off gas at their station right by the store. I combine that with 5 cents off a gallon with my store card.

My shopping area is about 1 mile from my house. There I have the supermarket, gas station, nail place, gym, wine store, deli, dry cleaners (which I rarely need any more). Drugstore and public library are within walking distance. Excellent pizza also there.
Even a laundromat, should my washer or dryer break down.
