GOP Sees Shot at Regaining Foley's Former Seat
GOP Sees Shot at Regaining Foley's Former Seat

There's a lingering perception among South Florida Republicans that Rep. Tim Mahoney is in Congress only because of former Rep. Mark Foley's misdeeds. That belief in Mahoney's vulnerability is fueling four Republicans to already declare they're running against the freshman Democrat -- nearly two years before the election.

Mahoney narrowly defeated state Rep. Joe Negron amid the cloud of Foley's congressional page scandal. Because of the unique circumstances surrounding his victory -- Foley quit the race after the primary, so his name was listed on the ballot instead of Negron's -- Republicans view this seat as one of their prime pickup opportunities.

"I think the current holder of that seat really came into that seat by way of an unfortunate incident," said state Rep. Gayle Harrell, one of Mahoney's announced GOP challengers. "The district needs to be turned back to its conservative roots."

The Democratic leadership has been closely attuned to Mahoney's situation and secured him plum committee assignments on the Financial Services and Agriculture committees. He's been outspoken on the need for insurance reform for homeowners -- a major concern among southern Floridians. And Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has given Mahoney a leading role on ethics and earmark reform legislation.

"I appreciate it because it's given me the opportunity to jump right in the fire," Mahoney said.

2. This seat actually really worries me...
along with Tom DeLay's former seat and a few others that are heavily red but went to us because of scandal. In two years, they'll still be heavily red, but there'll be a scandal-free Republican running for election (how long he remains scandal-free is anyone's guess, but you get the idea).
