Is John? McLaughlin of The McLaughlin Group a rethug, or
doing his job of being the instigator?

1. I think he goes to the beat of his own drum. Although I haven't watch him in a while,
he thought early on the war was a debacle and Shrub was screwing up.

"Eeeellllllaaaanor gee i think you're swellanore Clift?" Eleanore-"Um i choose fi....." "John-"Wrongggggggggg!, the correct answer 16, 423, 980!"

4. I take it you don't like Eleanor Clift! This show was just on here,
and Ellanor tries to work both sides of the aisle. The one you have to watch, who's on there now, is Monica :puke: Crowley.

13. The reference is to a parody of McLaughlin Group on SNL
in which Dana Carvey played John McLaughlin as an unabashedly cutesy-languaged bully hopelessly in love with his own pale wit.

Jack Germond left the show because McLaughlin was so insufferable.

But I do think John has mellowed somewhat over the years.

3. They don't come any rethug-ier than McLaughlin
He's palsy-walsy with Pat Buchanan and was a speechwriter for Richard Nixon.

Upon entering the Jesuit order of the Roman Catholic Church and being ordained a priest, McLaughlin spent years as a high school teacher at Fairfield College Preparatory School, a Jesuit prep school in Connecticut. A Republican, he originally opposed the Vietnam War and, in 1970, sought permission from his order to run for a seat in the United States Senate, representing Rhode Island. His superiors denied him this, even though they did grant permission to fellow Jesuit Father Robert Drinan to run for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for Massachusetts. McLaughlin defied his superiors and ran anyway, losing to the incumbent four-term Senator John O. Pastore.

Through a friendship with Pat Buchanan, McLaughlin became a war supporter and a speech writer/advisor to President Richard Nixon. Because priests are not allowed to take on political jobs, he was ordered by his Jesuit superiors to return to Boston and, rather than obey, he left the Society of Jesus.

8. His past isn't as interesting as his 'now'. We all did stupid things. And
Buchanan wasn't on again tonight.

Edited on Sat Apr-19-08 08:25 AM by OmmmSweetOmmm
pretty upsetting that Blankley is given credibility by being given a platform on that program.

10. He's A Rare Breed...A Pre-1964 Repugnican
He's from the GOOP of Jacob Javitz, Robert Taft...and, of all, people, George Romney...a party that still had some compassion. This was the one that supported and helped pass the Civil Rights bill in 1964...then got steamrolled by Goldwater then Nixon, the Southern strategy, Raygun and on into the abyss.

McLaughlin's been a big boooosh critic...especially about Iraq since the outset. His views on this was more along the lines of a Buchanan...that this invasion would make a mess of the Middle East. He was right...but the problem is, he knows it. Over the past couple years he's been very critical of boooosh...similar to many "mainstream" repugnicans who felt they were sold out. Consider McLaughlin as a prime case of major buyer's remorse.

playing devil's advocate or believed what he was saying. I still don't know.

17. Probably Both...
From what I've seen, he's not too hot about either Hillary or Obama...he was touting Dodd and Biden. But he also didn't seem too excited about any of the GOOP candidate...he was very critical of Mittens and Hucklenutz. I'd call him a "lapsed repugnican"...those who are waiting for the neo-cons and fundies to fall on their petards.

Cheers...

P.S....I don't get the show here until tomorrow...so no spoilers...

:hi:

18. He's been going after him for a while .....
I don't know if he does it to play devils advocate of he doesn't like him .... I still like watching .. he's like a crazy old uncle you can laugh at. He hasn't had Tony Blankley on there in a while and makes fun of him ... maybe he's backed up from not having anyone to needle so he's going overboard on Obama.

15. He just seems old school Catholic to me. At least that's my first impression.
And I don't mean that in a bad way. I've been watching the M-group off-and-on for years. I sense those are his roots, but he does surprise me sometimes with some reality-based observations.

Regardless of his positions, he is still very entertaining.

16. I have to admit I 'get' Catholic intellectuals, like 'clean' Gene McCarthy.
I enjoy hearing their opinions.

I think they're wrong a lot of the time but I still enjoy hearing them.

Monica is an idiot. Don't know why she's on...well...maybe I do & I just don't like it.

Mcs show is a big guilty pleasure for me.
