CREW Releases: Record Chaos: The Deplorable State of Electronic Record Keeping in the Federal Government
16 Apr 2008 - http://www.citizensforethics.org/recordchaos

Washington, DC – Based on months of research and the results of an on-line survey, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has released a report today, Record Chaos: The Deplorable State of Electronic Record Keeping in the Federal Government, concluding that the federal government is severely mismanaging its electronic records. The report and its findings and recommendations are available at www.citizensforethics.org.

Despite the ready availability of off-the-shelf products that would allow federal agencies to manage their records electronically, agencies continue to cling to outdated, inefficient and ineffective paper record keeping systems. The federal government has fallen woefully behind ......

1. As a former NASA person in charge of storing all of NASA's data

I can say that the federal government is well aware of the technologies and the policies that lead to safe, reliable, and easy to use electronic archival systems.

I personally was responsible for about 3 PB of data, all of which was redundantly recorded in two different facilities within a day (usually an hour or so) of the data being created or changed. In addition, we routinely moved a third copy of the data to a third facility which was geographically distant from the first two.

And this was long before *'s folks came in an took over.

If they lose things (like copies of millions of emails to/from the white house), it's because someone told them to lose it. If other agencies have not moved to electronic storage systems, it's because someone doesn't WANT them to... it's certainly not a matter of cost.

Oh well... I've posted about this in the past. It's just sad to see what's become of our federal government.
