Serious Question
Serious Question

The ACLU wants a special prosecutor to investigate Bush's admission that he authorized torture. I think that is a swell idea that is likely to go nowhere.
I hear John Conyers asked an assembled crowd today in Philadelphia whether any of them would object to impeaching the president. No one objected. Then he asked whether anyone would object to impeaching Cheney. Again, no one objected. I don't know the full context of Conyers' remarks, but the timing indicates it is related to Bush's admission.

If you were strategizing a blogswarm to get Congress, the press, and the administration to do something, what would you suggest we focus on? Should we focus on the lack of media coverage? Should we focus on getting a special prosecutor? Should we focus on getting the administration to comply with requests for documents and testimony from congressional committees?

I'm asking because I'm not sure what we should do, only that we should do something.

1. What is Conyer's gig, anyway?
I mean he's been clear as mud about his intentions. He goes from the we can't impeach angle to the should we impeach? angle with a frequency that makes the head spin. Well, not anymore, I'm not playing the game anymore but really, who is he trying to play this with.

7. When You Don't Have The Votes...
I wish Congressman Conyers was more aggressive in his prosecution and investigation of this regime, but he's a realist and knows there's not the vote, even in the House, for any serious condemnation of this regime...and that Impeachment at the present time doesn't stand a chance. Also, this regime has shown it's not afraid to use its pardoning power and be assured that anyone in this regime under legal heat on 1/19/09 will get a big fat pardon...thus do you push now and show your cards only to have this regime squash cases from moving forward or do you wait until this regime is removed and they can't obstruct. Lastly, there's the question of separation of powers that is being waged in the courts. This is where I wish Conyers had jumped earlier...wasting 6 months for a case we all knew would have to come...and now it won't be determined til the summer (if its not kicked down the road past the elections) that will compell his subpoenas to be honored. Bottom line is this regime acts in a criminal manner and doesn't care about subpoenas or any other devices the Congress can use...so do you fight now or continue to quietly investigate, build a case and bring it later when more light can be shown on crimes and a successful prosecution can be brought.

3. If it's up to the citizenry to somehow make the system work....
...or "to get Congress, the press, and the administration to do something," ...good luck.

The only way would be for huge, across the spectrum strikes and marches in the streets that go on for long periods of time. Sorry, but you're never going to see that in brainwashed America.

4. Push for inherent contempt
They have already tried to go through Justice and got the expected response. Next step should be to send out the sergeant-at-arms to haul enforce the subpoenas. Get them under oath and go from there.

6. Recall the Bushco 9/11 approach: "visit with," but wouldn't testify under oath
