Thursday, April 10, 2008 - http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_senate_elections/new_mexico/election_2008_new_mexico_senate

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in New Mexico shows that Democratic Congressman Tom Udall has widened his lead over potential Republican opponents ... Udall now leads Republicans Steve Pearce 54% to 40% and Heather Wilson 56% to 36%.

Among voters not affiliated with either major political party .... Udall leads Wilson 52% to 33% ....

The candidates are seeking to replace retiring Republican Senator Pete Domenici. New Mexico is one of several states where Democrats hope to pick up Senate seats in 2008. Other prospects include Virginia, New Hampshire, Minnesota, Colorado, and Alaska.

In New Mexico, Udall is now viewed favorably by 62% ............

16. Dangerous Dozen Open House Seats = Three Democrats are in the race
Dangerous Dozen Open House Seats
Stuart Rothenberg - April 08, 2008 - http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/04/dangerous_dozen_open_house_sea.html

A significant number of retirements since my last Dangerous Dozen (Oct. 25, 2007) has shuffled the list and shows why the fight for the House is a one-sided battle, with Democrats having most of the targets.

Here are the dozen most vulnerable open House seats, starting with the most likely seats to flip. The first three districts are all likely to go Democratic ......

New Mexico’'s 1st: Republican Rep. Heather Wilson’'s run for the Senate opens up a seat that she has held, though with significant difficulty, since a June 1998 special election. Last year, she was re-elected by 861 votes. Three Democrats are in the race: former Albuquerque Councilor Martin Heinrich, former state Health Secretary Michelle Lujan Grisham and former Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron. But Republicans are upbeat about their chances, with Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White the favorite of party insiders. Kerry carried the district with 51 percent in 2004.

Lawsuit challenges signatures gathered by congressional candidate
AP 04/05/2008 - http://www.lcsun-news.com/ci_8823874

SANTA FE—A former state lawmaker and two other women have sued to keep former Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron off the ballot in the 1st Congressional District Democratic primary.

Former Rep. Harriet Ruiz, Albuquerque lawyer Whitney Buchanan and Albuquerque resident Rosemary Sanchez filed the lawsuit Friday, claiming Vigil-Giron submitted more than 600 petition signatures that were not valid. That would leave her 100 names short of the required 1,214 signatures of registered Democrats in the district.

........

Vigil-Giron was one of several candidates who did not receive enough support at the major parties' nominating conventions last month to earn an automatic spot on the ballot. However, state law allowed them to get on the ballot by submitting additional signatures of registered voters to the secretary of state's office.

Friday marked the deadline to challenge candidates' petitions. ..............

3. Yay!
Election Projections is saying we'll pick up 3 Senate seats (including this one) and lose the one in Louisiana.

4. I haven't seen any polls about the LA Senate race
Kennedy is the opposition? That's pretty weak. Kennedy is a rather recent Dem convert...that won't get anyone in the GOP base excited. There has been very little talk of this race down here. Kennedy can't have raised too much money.
If Landrieu loses, I may be to blame. I have washed my hands of her over her DINO votes.

5. I haven't either.
I think part of her problem is that so many Democrats have left the state due to Katrina. But with the race being seen as competitive, you would think someone somewhere would have done a poll by now.

7. Katrina's aftermath has altered the LA demographic, eliminating DEMS.

14. Someone here posted a poll showing Landrieu winning handily
It was like 51-39 IIRC, but I can't search for it since I don't have a star.

6. Yeah, but .......
did you notice that the site doesn't seem to recognize that West Virginia is even having a race for Senator this year? It's a clear Democratic hold, but .... please, we are a separate state, we're not a part of Virginia, I don't live near Richmond....

(Most of you reading this will think that I have lost my mind, but Lasher, as a good West Virginian, will understand perfectly the frustration of living in the invisible state!)

9. Wildlife Group Targets N.M. Senate Race = www.2Bad4NM.org
Wildlife Group Targets N.M. Senate Race
9 April 2008 - http://www.redorbit.com/news/science/1334041/wildlife_group_targets_nm_senate_race/

A national group dedicated to protecting wildlife today begins airing a television commercial blasting both Republican U.S. Senate candidates in an effort to help Democrat Tom Udall win the seat being vacated by Republican Pete Domenici.

The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, which lists the New Mexico Senate seat as one of its top priorities, calls the ad "Two Bad for New Mexico" and says it will "shed light on the anti-conservation congressional records" of U.S. Reps. Steve Pearce of Hobbs and Heather Wilson of Albuquerque.

The group also has created a Web site, scheduled to go online today, www.2Bad4NM.org, that promises to point out "the links between big oil campaign contributions to both the candidates and their anti-conservation voting records."

The organization's Web site has a Feb. 21 news release that says electing Udall will be one of its "main areas of focus during the 2008 elections."

Quoting the group's president .....
