Procedures and Rules of Conduct for Press Conferences with President John McCain
February 15, 2009

For Immediate Release to all Members of the Whitehouse Press Corps:

Procedures and Rules of Conduct for Press Conferences with President John McCain

If the president calls on you to ask a question, try to avoid making any quick sudden movements that might alarm the president.

If you ask the president a question, please make sure you don't cover any sensitive issues, like Iraq, the economy or his military record.

Please don’t try to be clever by asking the president how he enjoyed his flight as a deviant way and of steering the conversation over to the four or five navy jets that McCain crashed.

Do not mention the fact that President McCain graduated in the bottom one percent of his class at Annapolis: All the American people need to know is that he is a “great American hero.”

When the subject of heroism comes up, please start your question by acknowledging how brave McCain was in Vietnam by never breaking under pressure – and never taking part in revealing military targets to the enemy, the name of his ship or taking part in a broadcasted confession.

Journalists of Asian-decent are asked to address questions to the president in a particularly calm, reassuring, and non-threatening manner. If the president should happen to refer to you as a “damn, gook,” try to remain calm – Remember that the president will try to get to your question, when it is your turn.

Female Asian reporters must pretend like they don’t understand him if he says something along the lines, “How much baby” or “you want to take a ride on the White Comet?”
