2. I heard a story on NPR about this the other day.
Comics were read by practically everyone under the age of 25, and most of their subject matter was noir-ish -- a lot of it involved murder and other crimes. Some man interviewed a lot of teenagers who were institutionalized and guess what? They all read comics (just like all the other kids) so comics were blamed for juvenile delinquency. Comics were banned in some states, after Congressional hearings about their influence on the young.
