Rick Astley Understands The "Irony" Behind The "Rickroll"

posted Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Tags: Rick Astley, Rickrolling

Has-been-turned-Inter net-icon Rick Astley finally comments on the "Rickrolling" phenomenon in today's LA Times. The "Rickroll" is an online fakeout in which bloggers present a link to something salacious - like a Lindsay Lohan sex tape - which instead re-directs to the "Never Gonna Give You Up" video on YouTube, bouffant, big sunglasses, and all. "If this had happened around some kind of rock song, with a lyric that really meant something - a Bruce Springsteen, "God bless America" ... or an anti-something kind of song, I could kind of understand that," Astley said. "But for something as, and I don't mean to belittle it, because I still think it's a great pop song, but it's a pop song; do you know what I mean? It doesn't have any kind of weight behind it, as such. But maybe that's the irony of it."

3. Rick Astley clearly doesn't understand irony at all.
It's funny because your song is lousy, Rick.

5. Well he did call in pretty "naff"
something which is seen to be particularly cheesy or tacky or in otherwise poor aesthetic taste.

6. RTFA.
He's well aware that it's a dumb, cheesy pop song and thinks the concept of Rickrolling is hilarious, particularly what Anon is doing.

He's got a great sense of humor about the whole thing, which is more than I can say for the people who like to bash him.

I thought the whole Rickrolling phenomenon was a total fabrication/spoof based on a fictional lounge lizard wannabe.

8. Oh of course he won't get in a snit about it!
Rickrolling is NOT negative publicity. I guarantee that since Rickrolling began, that damn song has seen a big increase in downloads from iTunes and other music stores where you can buy a single. (No, I haven't dl'd it. :P) Pretty good compared to total obscurity. Astley would be a fool to get his knickers in a wad over the phenomenon.
