Why is Air America's SF Station so poorly operated?
Throughout the day:

dead air
audio feeds overlapping each other (for minutes!)

why is this station so poorly operated? this has been going on for a couple years but it doesn't seem to have gotten much better.

1. You try operating a satellite feed, a mic, audio equipment...
and a bong all at the same time.

2. The AM station
here did the same thing, was really infuriating when I tried to listen to the Young Turks and Sam Seder. Now that they carry Bill Press, Stephani Miller and Ed Schultz it doesn't seem to happen too often.

7. Hmm. AM-1260 in DC converted over to those a couple of years ago,
and they have gotten better. They used to have lots of dead air and double overs.

4. WCPT in Chicago was like that for a long time. It seems better lately.
Still, more often than not, I prefer the AA stream from some other towns.

5. You might as well ask, "Why is Liberal Radio so poorly operated?"
The answer is money.

They don't have the cash for the best engineers and equipment.

Meanwhile on your local Rush based station....

8. Radio On The Cheap
This is one of six stations operated by Clear Channel in the Bay Area and like many CC stations, they're the weak sisters to the more profitable FM stations. Their licenses are still valuable as "real estate" and they pull in a couple of bucks. Little money is invested in the station as costs are constantly being cut to fit the company's bottom line and stations like this one are nothing but turn-key operations.

Progressive talk is in a catch 22 these days...there still too few of these stations around the country and a majority are like this one...nothing but clearing houses for generic national programs with few, if any, local shows or community involvement. Because they are so poorly programmed and promoted, ratings are low, which justify to the corporates not to spend money to upgrade the station that would help improve ratings (and help expand the format to other markets) and revenues.

Radio is in a major funk these days...the "de-reg" games have turned the dial into a cesspool and the smell is driving people and money further and further away.

9. I live in the east bay approx. 35 miles from SF
The reception is awful , high pitched squealing comes in great
but the actual talking I can barely hear it .

I usually listen online .
