And yet the Sunni/Shi'ite antagonism is sufficient "proof" to say other things are impossible--Iranian support for AQ, Iranian support for Taliban. What's needed isn't facile, simpler-than-possible denials-in-principle, but fact-based denials.

The problem is that fact-based denials take work. Iran and AQ are probably on-going enemies because of AQ/Salafist insistence that Shi'ites are apostate, with the avowed intention of disposing of the Shi'ite theocracy. Hamas is a moderate theocratic movement, in that it's not got overt intentions of taking over Iran or subjugating Shi'ites. Were AQ to declare a hudna with Iran and Shi'ites and make common cause, it's unclear to me that they couldn't cooperate; this is what was implicitly claimed for Iranian-Syrian support for some Salafist movements in Anbar, something also impossible because Sunnis and Shi'ites simply can never work together ... ever. Except for Hamas and Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas/Islamic Jihad.
