New Yorkers, weigh in here...
I'm pretty upset about Spitzer. I have always so impressed with him. I thought he'd be a natural for U.S. Attorney General.

Are New Yorkers as shocked about this as I am? What's your take on this? Seems to me that when you get into high office, you gain a lot of enemies and you have to remain above reproach.

1. When anyone, of any party, begins to go on a
"crusade" against anything, I always wonder what they have to hide. I always felt that Spitzer's zeal was too "crusade-like" and it made me very skeptical. I wish I could say I was terribly shocked. I am very disappointed. If he resigns, David Paterson would make a spectacular governor, better than Spitzer, IMHO.

2. From what I understand, he is not a particularly nice person.
I think we are really really annoyed, because we liked having a Democratic Governor.... But very few of us are really shocked.

(How big do your personal blinders have to be, not to KNOW when you are living in a fishbowl?)

3. Not shocked, but very disappointed
He already had a lot of enemies... But he could have accomplished a lot, he set very high expectations and now it's obvious none of it is going to be accomplished. It was so exciting to have a Democrat for Governor after Pataki, but we aren't looking that great after Hevesi and Spitzer. I work with mostly Republicans - the news was like Christmas morning for them.

4. He's been a terrible disappointment as Governor
He picks fights with both Democrats and Republicans, and acts almost as high handed as Bush (slight exaggeration, but not as much as you'd think.)

I got an email from Andrew Cuomo2010 yesterday. I deleted it, but if he wasn't running for Governor before, this should put him in the race.

5. As a New Yorker, I am shocked and disgusted
Hubris knows no party affiliation. He absolutely should have known that his enemies were champing at the bit to find something to bring him down. He obviously thought he could get away with it - I feel no pity for him - only for New Yorkers who are once again let down by our leaders.

6. I think he's a moron
he just blew all the progress we made recently to bits.

I think he and NY liberals will pull out of this, but it'll take another year of idiotic arguing and pettiness, and we needed action back on DAY ONE.

7. I've always liked the name Elliot
It has an air of respectability.

8. In 2006, I helped put together campaign information for Spitzer
in my county. I saw so much potential in him, and I saw him as an honest politician who truly wanted to defend the people of New York State. This incident has made me question that; I am so disappointed. Why would he waste his career on this? How badly does someone need sex? He was the Governor of New York State. He certainly would have been reelected. Many thought he might be the Democratic nominee for President. Why would he waste it? He must have known that there was a chance someone would find out, or maybe he didn't (in which case I question his intelligence). He has destroyed his career and his opportunity to help the people of New York.

I have no sympathy for him at this moment. I have no sympathy for any Democrat who has sexual relations with someone other than his or her spouse. They know the stakes. They know the consequences. The party does not need sex scandals...we're not Republicans. We have too much work to do.
