The greatest man who ever lived died yesterday. He will be missed.
On March 4, Gary Gygax died at his home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, after suffering two strokes in 2004 and being diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He was 69. While the man may not be with us any more, the ideas that he popularized though his work on Dungeons and Dragons will guide the game world for a very long time to come. In many ways, Gary Gygax built the bridge (complete with trolls underneath and dragons flying above) that we walk across every time we play a role-playing game, whether it be with a pen and pencil, a computer, or a home console.

I didn't realize he was from Wisconsin. It must have been a miserable, long, cold fucking winter just like this one that gave him his inspiration to invent another world to live in.

RIP Mr. Gygax

8. Never played D&D myself, but his system for division of spoils helped my family greatly after mom--
--passed away. I owe Gary Gygax a debt of gratitude.

My sister's husband has played D&D forever, and he's the one who came up with the idea.

We (my 3 sibs and I) were a certified mess by the time our mother died, as her behavior had been toxic, erratic, and divisive for some time before that. I'm the oldest, and my youngest brother (the executor for her estate) accused me of taking things I should not have. It was horrible, and will probably never be truly healed. I promised our mom to take custody of her genealogical research papers, and no matter how many times I explained that 30 years of writing is an awful lot of paper, he couldn't envision how it could come to over a dozen large boxes packed by our sister and me and shipped to me.

About two months after her death we gathered from around the country to clean out her condo, and to divide items of sentimental value by choosing them from the inventory and throwing dice for them. My BIL was the only non-sibling in the group, supervising and advising this method. It worked brilliantly, and there was absolutely no dispute about the results.

Well, except for an old china cabinet that had been our grandmother's.....my brother and I tossed the dice three times before we broke a tie. Three times, while steam started to come out of his ears. heehee. Then I won.

Godspeed, Mr. Gygax. Your D&D universe found an application in the real world, and I will never forget it.

Hekate

10. Many will mourn his passing

My brothers and friends have been playing from college to the present day, well over 20 years. I played some in college, but I use the books and concepts for story material. He will be missed.
