School Snubs Speaker Over Abortion Stance
School Snubs Speaker Over Abortion Stance
Conservative Catholic Parents Applaud School's Invitation Withdrawal

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Conservative Catholic parents are applauding a parochial elementary school's cancellation of a speech by farmworker advocate Dolores Huerta because of her position on abortion.

Students at Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Bakersfield had chosen Huerta as a motivational speaker after reading about her role as co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America.

But the California Catholic Daily said the school withdrew its invitation to Huerta after parents complained that her support for legal abortion was "anti-Catholic."

Authorities at the University of St. Thomas in Houston also canceled a Huerta speech in February due to a flap over the same issue.

1. Well, it IS a Catholic school...
What did she expect? Conservative Catholics generally aren't very hip on the whole abortion thing.

3. Right.
Its a private school. Thats the main reason the parents have them there to start with.

If anyone believes in freedom of choice. Then they have to respect eveyone's choice.

8. Where does it say Huerta would be discussing abortion?
It doesn't. The parents banned her simply because of her abortion stance, something they would never have been aware of if the Houston chapter of their organization hadn't told them about it. Evidently the mere presence of someone with a different opinion around their children is too scary for these parents to contemplate.

In AMERICA.

Why don't they just do like the JoHos, who encourage their sheep to break ties with anyone who doesn't believe like they do...including family.

10. They're obviously not peace-and-justice Catholics.
No Dorothy Day lovers there. *sigh*

4. It doesn't say, but I doubt Huerta was going to be discussing abortion
I hope those students recognize the profound ignorance that has deprived them of the motivational speaker they selected.

5. Yeah, but could they afford to take that chance?
You know that by simply discussing it around those virginal, chaste, impressionable Catholic girls, they'd all conceive and immediately rush out and have abortions. Better to be safe than sorry, I say.

7. Were they afraid she was going to hand out free abortion coupons or something?
Disclaimer: Yes, it's a private school and they can be as stupid as they want so obviously they can't be forced to let her speak.

With that said, Huerta was asked to speak as a motivational speaker as a farmworker advocate...something completely unrelated to her beliefs on legal and private procedures. It's an elementary school for crying out loud. Were the parents afraid she was going to discuss abortion and "corrupt" their perfect little snowflakes, or do they find enjoyment in judging and shunning a woman based on beliefs that differ from their own?

Hmmm...I wonder what that Jesus guy would think of her work as a farmworker advocate.

9. Only because assholish behavior is legal doesn't mean we can't call them assholes.
Which they are. To the max.
