US Redemption Mandates Impeachment of Bush
Submitted by davidswanson on Mon, 2007-02-26 19:43. Impeachment
By Mike Konopacki and Kathy Wilkes, Capital Times (Madison, WI)

.............

Unless the Bush regime is stopped, Iraq will get even worse. We might also end up in a deadly conflict with Iran. Bush & Co. have already deployed the same scare tactics they used to launch their illegal war against Iraq. Yes, illegal. It's not a "mistake" or "blunder." It's a crime, a violation of U.S. and international laws. No one's being prosecuted for it. It can happen again.

President Bush said he takes "responsibility" for "mistakes" in Iraq. So what? No one's holding him accountable; he can go on and make more "mistakes." Illegal war, warrantless wiretaps, "extraordinary rendition," torture - all illegal, all unpunished. Bush et al. are literally getting away with murder. It's the perfect crime.

..........

Death, destruction, opposition - none of it matters to the Bushies. When asked what would happen if the Senate passed a resolution against Bush's "troop surge" (i.e. war escalation), Vice President Dick Cheney said, "It won't stop us." What will?

Impeach, convict, imprison. It's harsh; it has to be. We must demonstrate that we take responsibility for what our government did and are willing to punish the government for doing it. We must deter future governments from more illegal wars. Think about it: If Richard Nixon had been imprisoned for war crimes instead of just resigning over Watergate, would we be in this quagmire now?

6. Let's get Gonzales now!
Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 05:19 PM by calipendence
We don't need a majority in the Senate to throw him out! He's at the core of much of the serious stuff too, and has in effect acknowledged his complicity in many public statements he's made lately. We need to make a SERIOUS example of him and have him tossed in the brig!

For the rest of Bushco, this will them that if they are doing the same things, this is GOING to be their future! If they are thinking about partaking in the crap that Gonzales is involved with, then perhaps enough of them will back off or resign.

5. Wet finger, hold in air, sample political breezes.
Hmmm. I estimate only 20% of population agrees with kpete on this. (The fact that I am one of them does not change things.)

Therefore, put away impeachment flag and fly the investigation/accountability flag.

Investigate hard. Hold them accountable.

Then, in a week or so, wet finger, sample political breezes again. What new revelations have caused reluctant anti-impeachers to change sides? What % of population agree with kpete after the latest scandals? When that number reaches -- what? 40%? 50%? -- then let impeachment flag fly. (Ain't it purty?)

Sure, it's a less satisfying strategy, but it's pragmatic. It's what the politicians are doing, on both sides of the aisle.

A mishandled impeachment could feed into another Republican election-count 'victory' in 2008, with pundits saying "America just couldn't support impeachment of a president in wartime."

7. Absodamnlutly
People just don't get it, the fastest way is to start the investigation, he will leave on his own, they all will run for cover if they appoint a special prosecutor

8. Speaking of impeachment. Louis Farakkhan gave his last
speech today in Detroit. John Conyers attended. Farakkhan tore up Bush and his entire staff, urged impeachment and called to Conyers to stand up and get it going. Called him "My brother John." It was quite an eloquent speech. Carried on C-span.His language about * would have made your hearts sing.

12. If they keep getting away with murder, pretty soon we might be in real trouble.
Oh, that's right. We are in real trouble. Letting them get away with the S&L scandal, the October Surprise, the Iran-Contra, the K-Street Project, the election frauds, the lack of accountability around 9-11, the signing statements nullifying the Constitution, the contracting frauds, the OSP fraud... pretty soon we might be in real trouble. The Congress might have to try and pass another law making all this illegal.

13. Proceed with caution
I was against some peoples original rush to start working on impeachment immediately. I wanted the dust from the election to settle a bit. But now there has been enough time. Bush and most of the republicans still in congress have shown they have no intention of listening to the American people, of reconsidering their actions, of following due process. It has become plain that they have left us no other choice, no other way of reigning them in. They ignore the normal checks and balances this government was designed to run with, and so we need exercise our ultimate authority.

I still think we need not to rush blindly forward, to make sure we do thorough investigations and be certain each cog in their machine is pulled apart in a way they can not plug a new one in.

14. If we the people are serious about impeachment
it is time to begin recall petitions of senators and congresspeople who appose this tak. Me-berman first on the list.
