Requirements: This is not a “gay-only” event. Just come with the ability to send a message to the WBC and Fred Phelps that intolerance is unacceptable.

The Westboro Baptist Church, of Topeka, Kansas, is a hate group masquerading as a Christian church.

Led by the Rev. Fred Phelps, the misguided members of this church target homosexuals and a range of others with messages of hate. The church’s outrageous protest actions - the group prefers to picket funerals - have earned Phelps and his ilk much media coverage.

To date, the WBC’s protests have taken place in at least 22 states, and have inspired a wave of grassroots anger. As a result, 38 states have introduced bills to limit protests near funerals, and at least 29 of those states have passed such measures. Phelps has vowed to challenge the legislation, alleging that these new restrictions unconstitutionally restrict freedom of speech.

The time has come to turn the tables. Let us all gather in one place, at one time to (peacefully) show Phelps and his church that freedom of speech works both ways.

On the other hand, he can't exactly be ignored. I have to admit I don't know what's the best way to deal with that quasi-human.

3. When he came to Brooklyn after 9/11

I organized a silent and peaceful counter-demonstration where community members pledge x amount of dollars for every minute that he and his family hold their protest. I then donated the money to an LBGT organization. Since they were protesting the Fire Department and EMT, I ended up raising $1800 for FIRE/FLAG, a LGBT Fire department and EMT social group.

5. I agree-- why give him free publicity? I know someone...

(a real Baptist minister, no less) who has run into Phelps several times and says the thing to do with him is just laugh at his antics. He doesn't know what to do when laughed at.

Phelps feeds off the hate, and the worst thing you can do is confront him. Besides, his entire "flock" is half his family-- let him just die off in his own filth.

This is great. I might be in Missouri by the time this is happening, and if I am, you can count on me making the trip to KS. This is one of the few individuals in the world that I can say I honestly hate.
