Local schools beef-free for a while

Alleged mistreatment of cattle in Southern California
had local repercussions — thousands of pounds of
ground beef are sitting in school freezers, unusable
until further notice.
For now, local schools are serving beef-free meals.

The allegations and resulting concerns about food
safety impacted school districts throughout the state,
including all local schools, explained Tanya Harter,
Chico Unified School District interim director of food
services.

Last week a video surfaced, showing workers at a Chino
facility abusing cows that appeared sick or crippled,
and the U.S. Agriculture Department opened an
investigation, according to the Associated Press.

Subsequently, the California Department of Education
alerted school districts not to use any beef products
until further notice.
