Cops Who Ate Pot Burger Unhappy with Cooks' Sentences

Posted by Jan Frel, AlterNet at 2:20 PM on February 13, 2008.

Probation isn't enough for a little prank?

Sly attempts at fun in this country are a serious matter often resolved with mace and tasers. Some Burger King cooks served burgers spiked with pot to two cops in Albuquerque, NM. The cops got high, the cooks got caught -- and now the officers are mad that the perps received only probationary sentences:

Henry Gabaldón and a fellow Isleta pueblo officer ate those burgers while on duty. Both got high and could have hurt themselves or someone else that night, he said. Gabaldón called the crime a personal attack that had no consequences for the attackers. "The message was it's OK to hurt an officer," Gabaldón said. At first Gabaldón was very matter of fact about what happened on that October night in 2006. He how he and a fellow officer went to the Los Lunas Burger King and got Whoppers that had secretly been filled with pot."There was a lot of marijuana on the hamburgers," he said. But it quickly became apparent how personal this is to Gabaldón. "In the end we have to go home, too," he said. "We have families, and that is what it was, to all police officers, just a slap in the face."

The mindset that produces statements like "we have to go home, too .... We have families" is an extreme and amateur example of the victim culture that cops typically deride. But calling the event a "slap in the face" to "all police officers" is a level of self-pity that even Tyra Banks could laugh at.

1. If free pot is a slap in the face,
a lot of Americans would like a punch in the jaw.

2. Sounds like the incident belongs in a version of Police Academy
although if the cops had actually hurt someone or themselves, it wouldn't be that funny.

3. maybe but i would be angry also
i don't ever, ever want another person to think they have the right to tamper with my consciousness or the amount of mood-altering drugs that goes into my body

maybe as a woman i'm more sensitive to this but i think anyone who "spikes" another person's food or beverage with a drug needs to serve at least some time

4. Spiking food/drink without the other person's knowledge is not cool at all.
Just not cool. Oh my god, do you realize what just happened? We agreed, for perhaps the third time! Woohoo for us!

9. True... of the misc. secretions etc you mentioned -pot sounds better
It's still uncool.

I grew up w/ many members of the Isleta, Jemez, and Zuni pueblos. Their brand of humor is rather.... different. Humor is rarely shown, but when it is &^&^$$%@#. I 'got it' because I grew up surrounded by Native Americans.

I think the 'slap on the wrist' is taking into acct their culture and their age. New Mexico is not a draconian state.

That said - I would be pissed off if anyone spiked my food/drink w/ ANYTHING I did not see in the ingredients list.

10. Trust me, personally I have no problem with pot sprinkled LIBERALLY in my burger or preferably

my brownie if I knew it was going to be there. But having my food tampered with in restaurants without my knowledge turns my stomach.

Probation is appropriate for kids in a case like this, imho.

12. While I agree that spiking food is not cool...
...c'mon people, with all the police brutality we have seen lately... could this be a solution? :hippie:

I remember saying in high school, (when asked to write an essay about how to stop nuclear war) that if all the leaders of the world could just smoke a dube and talk...man, we'd be fine!
Just think, cops that really are more interested in donuts than tasing innocent people... :donut:

(I'm soooo naughty!)
:smoke:

13. I think they should have been given way harsher sentences.
If someone is willing to hurt or cause harm to a law enforcement officer what would they be willing to do to a regular joe like you or me. If some ass hat put marijuana in my burger I would be pissed if they just got probation.
