Memo to John McCain: There is no "R" in "Washington"
Do I have to listen to this guy say "Warshington" over and over for the next nine months? It's like listening to the moron-in-chief say "nukyuler."

7. My parents broke me of that habit,
saying "Warshington", when I was about six years old. Poor John McCain! His parents must not have loved him very much.

10. That's typically a Midwestern idiosyncracy.
Which is perhaps why I didn't notice it...either that, or I was too busy putting my warsh in the dryer.

25. Yuppers. Or wrenching our dishes, ha!
Grew up in Ohio, and til I left home and got married, I never knew or was ever told that I was mispronouncing "Washington". Everyone said it that way. Then one day, after returning from a march in Washington, I was politely informed by my new mother-in-law that I was too bright to display such ignorance by speaking so poorly. Never forgot her advice. Til I moved out here to Washington and found that roughly 2/3 of the population live in Warshington state.

I fit right in.

12. Are you from Washington state by chance?
I am... but I have to say, I've gotten used to hearing "Warshington"... I had a roommate who pronounced it that way and it drove me nuts, but now it's just another one of those things. Like how my name always gets misspelled.

Nukyuler, on the other hand..........

16. There's some weirdo kind of loss of language going on.
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 01:15 AM by sfexpat2000
Politicians can't speak English, let alone pronounce it.

But, there's more. Anchors can't read the language -- Greta who works WJ couldn't pronounce "ostensible" the other day and she has frequent pronunciation catastrophes.

News writers can't compose paragraphs anymore. When I hunt for stories for the ER Daily News, so many of them use sentences as paragraphs. Maybe editors have been outsourced to Mars.

I usually agree with you about the myth of the Golden Age of anything, but holy cow, it's like we're leaking language and there's no fill up in sight.

34. I keep hearing pundits on TV misprounouncing the word "pundit."
They say "pundent" with an "N". Very strange. You'd think a pundit could pronounce pundit.

27. That weird interstitial "r" pops up in the oddest places: Boston with Cuber,
the Appalachians also have "Warshington" as does Ballmer.

The thing that I cannot stand to hear is a broad 'a' where it historically is absent in American speech or in Southern England, the Boston equivalents of Hyacinth Bouquet tend to do this at times. . .

But then again, I find "fixin' to" perfectly acceptable pulpit level speech!
