What makes BRAZILE a "superdelegate"? Plus, she will quit Dems if supers outweigh votes
She was sitting there, but didn't say it herself. George WILL said she would quit the Democratic Party if the superdelegates overrule the popular vote.

As for superdelegates-- elected officials, who else? Plus, it's being said that superdelegates "were not elected by anybody"-- ?

1. Well, I'd be happy if she would quit the Dems for any reason
Edited on Sun Feb-10-08 10:10 AM by undeterred
so go ahead, Donna.

Edit: She is probably a member of the Democratic National Committee, selected by her state party.

Unassigned
Four "Unassigned" superdelegates to be determined before the convention.

* Superdelegates from Democrats Abroad count as 1/2 of a vote.

In addition to the above superdelegates, there are 76 additional unpledged add-ons that will be picked at the various state conventions.

Both lists can be found through this link.

13. More selected than elected.
From Wiki:
Superdelegates to the 2008 Democratic National Convention include all Democratic members of the United States Congress, Democratic governors, various additional elected officials, members of the Democratic National Committee, as well as "all former Democratic Presidents, all former Democratic Vice Presidents, all former Democratic Leaders of the U.S. Senate, all former Democratic Speakers of the U.S. House of Representatives and Democratic Minority Leaders, as applicable, and all former Chairs of the Democratic National Committee."<3> There is an exception, however, for otherwise qualified individuals who endorse another party’s candidate for President; they lose their superdelegate status. In 2008, Senator Joe Lieberman was disqualified as a superdelegate because he endorsed Republican John McCain.<4>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superdelegate

From the Democratic Convention Website:
UNPLEDGED AND PLEDGED PARTY LEADERS AND ELECTED OFFICIAL DELEGATES

The procedure to be used for certifying unpledged party leader and elected official delegates is as follows:
Not later than March 1, 2008, the Secretary of the Democratic National Committee shall officially confirm to each State Democratic Chair the names of the following unpledged delegates who legally reside in their respective state and who shall be recognized as part of their state’s delegation unless any such member has publicly expressed support for the election of, or has endorsed, a presidential candidate of another political party;

The individuals recognized as members of the DNC (as set forth in Article Three, Sections 2 and 3 of the Charter of the Democratic Party of the United States); and,

The Democratic President and the Democratic Vice President of the United States, if applicable; and,

All Democratic members of the United States House of Representatives and all Democratic members of the United States Senate; and,

The Democratic Governor, if applicable; and,

All former Democratic Presidents, all former Democratic Vice Presidents, all former Democratic Leaders of the U.S. Senate, all former Democratic Speakers of the U.S. House of Representatives and Democratic Minority Leaders, as applicable, and all former Chairs of the Democratic National Committee.

The history of the "super delegates" is interesting. They came to be as a result of the outcome of the 1968 Dem Convention, and changes made as a result. Further changes were made and instituted for the 1980 Dem Convention. Here's a brief history posted at Wiki:

After the 1968 Democratic National Convention, the Democratic Party implemented changes in its delegate selection process, based on the work of the McGovern-Fraser Commission. The purpose of the changes was to make the composition of the convention less subject to control by party leaders and more responsive to the votes cast during the campaign for the nomination.

These comprehensive changes left some Democrats believing that the role of party leaders and elected officials had been unduly diminished, weakening the Democratic ticket. In response, the superdelegate rule was instituted after the 1980 election. Its purpose was to accord a greater role to active politicians.<1>

In the 1984 election, the major contenders for the Presidential nomination were Gary Hart and Walter Mondale. Each of them won some primaries and caucuses. Hart was only slightly behind Mondale in the total number of votes cast, but Mondale won the support of almost all the superdelegates and became the nominee.<2>

The superdelegates have not always prevailed, however. In the Democratic primary phase of the 2004 election, Howard Dean acquired an early lead in delegate counts by obtaining the support of a number of superdelegates before even the first primaries were held. Nevertheless, John Kerry defeated Dean in a succession of primaries and caucuses and won the nomination.

Here's an interesting chart that compares primary results to superdelegate endorsements.

7. We don't elect our Governors, Senators, etc?
I think we need to do a much better job of letting people know how these things are done. You elected a superdelegate when you elected a Democratic Governor, Senator, Congressman, etc.

Most of the other superdelegates are state chairs and national committee members, who are elected by the state committees, who are elected, in most states (if not all, I'm not sure) by the county committees, who are elected by the local committees.

To me, it seems like. if you don't like the way things works, get involved in your local party. Too many people show up once every four years and complain about the way the party works, without thinking about the fact that some of us work at keeping the party going all the time, not just in the presidential years.

14. & the vast majority of Dem Party constituents don't vote at all, EVER
If every single eligible voter actually voted, there wouldn't be a Rethug in office anywhere. Plus, I personally know a couple here and a couple there who are beneficiaries of Dem programs--Medicaid, Medicare, food stamps, Social Security, minimum wage raises, GI Bill-----who voted for Shrub. No concept of what the bedrock philosophies of the parties are or where these programs came from.

11. Like I said, if she quits the party, no great loss.
If she quits as a superdelegate,no great loss. If she gets her mug off television, big improvement.

12. The point is if the nom is decided by something other than primary/caucus processes
It will not be legit in the eyes of most people and this whole dance will have been a charade.

If the superdelegates overrule the candiate with a plurality coming out of the primary/caucus process, it will be a disaster for the party and many people will sit out the general --many people who could in the past ever have conceived of not voting for the Dem no matter what. This is how big a deal this is.

I don't want a governor or senator deciding that their votes are going to override the numbers of pledged delegates. That would be a farse. I'm not crazy about Donna Brazile, but she's right on this one.

16. Fine with me. I'd prefer ALL elections to be by VOTING (not caucuses)
Edited on Sun Feb-10-08 12:09 PM by UTUSN
It's clear that very committed activists---a.k.a. "ZEALOTS"---show up at caucuses and skew the outcomes. It's bad enough that most eligible voters don't even actually vote.

Too bad about the source, but Pat BUCHANAN, whom I regard as a NAZI and a NIXON-bot, *correctly* has been repeating in his marathon appearances on MSRNC that McGOVERN *and* GOLDWATER all attracted a humongous following---------among their ACTIVISTS/ZEALOTS (my words), and ended up with the worst ever showings.

Add caucuses to the long list of our antiquated and deadwood political institutions that will sink us for clinging to them. Electoral college.

A tidbit from some history of the Catholic church said that they considered electing popes every four years but realized that there would be continual turmoil and perpetual electioneering and they settled on life tenure. Not that I'm advocating that, but we're deeply IN to that perpetual electioneering.

Answer, she's a hypocrite!
