10. Discouraging, isn't it?
Maybe people don't know what NCLB is so they don't check into this?

I checked in because I happened to notice a Dem candidate's proposal on a flyer today to "reform and fund NCLB," and I immediately thought to myself, why? Just get rid of that good for no one piece of shit legislation. Liberate teachers so they can liberate our children. It pissed me off, frankly. (Pardon my French.)

11. Yeah
The last thing we need is to "fully fund" shitty legislation designed to undermine democracy and advance corporate dominion. But we DO need to fund reforms that would genuinely help children..

I'm getting used to education getting short shrift around here but even if we get the attention of only a few, that's better than nothing.

Thank you for your support!

14. Was that one of our Prezzies or local? I think doing away with NCLB should be one of the top planks
in the platform.

who to watch early--I've warned people about John McCain for 25 years and now I'm getting thanked for it!

But of course, that's entirely up to you...

ruins my days this time of the teaching year. My subject is not tested so it falls by the wayside in order to prepare for the tests.

16. Already signed it, but I'll K&R you!
NCLB is an obscene perversion of the public education system. My kids are doing there standardized testing today, by the way. Yesterday they asked me, "Why do we have to take all these tests all the time?" I told 'em it was because people don't trust teachers to do their jobs. They said that was insulting. The kids get it if no one else does!

22. NCLB--50% crap but 50% hated by adherents of a failed pedagogy
a lot of NCLB hate comes from antique supporters of discovery and active learning. these are failed approaches, ultra dependent on tiny class sizes and not statistically any better than their more traditional counterparts. in the end, direct instruction coupled with sound assessment strategies won the day. these are pedagogical approaches that work just fine for the rest of the G8 and which would work perfectly here if teachers would adapt. sure NCLB in its current incarnation is crap, but the philosophy behind it won. a lot of the criticism is just sour grapes from the touchy feely participation trophy crowd... the same ones who brought us mainstreaming and social promotion. their time is over. these sorts of protests are just their death throes.

24. My Daughter Is Caught Up In This Mess...
NCLB has been a disaster from the outset...just ask any teacher. It's made their jobs harder and hurt many students in the process.

My daughter is teaching in a small town school...an old rust-belt town...that suffers from high unemployment and a depressed tax base. It's been on this downslide for years and the schools have had to do more with less. Then comes NCLB...establishing standards that the district was hard-pressed to meet and it kept falling further behind. Now the district faces mandatory restructuring to keep its funding and its created a lot of problems as teachers don't know if they'll be staying or going...or have already bailed on the district. It's definitely scared better teachers away...the very teachers the program demans the district employ. It's gotten so bad, my daughter is seriously thinking of going for a masters degree and hoping that NCLB is gone by the time she re-emerges in the market.

Yes...SIGN THE PETITION.
