Irony, bitter irony. CBS Sunday Morning - Monuments Men
CBS had a very nice segment on the Monuments Men of WWII. Men who did the detective work and labor of finding and processing the arts taken by the Germans and getting it returned to private individuals and countries. Toward the end there was a clip of some of the survivors the National Monuments Men Foundation for the Preservation of Art being given the 2007 National Medal of Arts and National Humanities awards - BY GEORGE BUSH. My anger caused me to write.

How dare he? What did he do to preserve the art and monuments in Iraq?

For me, the complement to CBS turned bitter for me. That CBS could not make critical reference to what the United States allowed to happen or what they orchestrated. What is the difference in concept?

There are many places on the net to find out what these good men did and how they deserved a medal. The United States contributed a significant effort of staff and money to return these works of art. Our people performed a rescue. Bush's people allowed theft. Knowing what they knew from WWII, they took NO PRECAUTION.

Every day we learn about politics, we also learn cultures and history - through the internet - 'the school of introduction to more if you want more'.

This morning I learned about the Monuments Men - something that I knew about vaguely, but not in detail. Kicked off by the segment on CBS and followed up on the internet though not in the detail of reading a book or taking a course, but sufficiently, relative to the time I have.

This morning a network taught me how phony this country is that they honor the men and history, but refuse to recognize the realities of the acts of this administration in Iraq.

This morning I learned how angry I am that we suffer the irony and cannot be honest about what this country is doing.

So, CBS got a A and ended up with an F.

We are living out a delusion. This is not America.

We still have honorable citizens like the Monument Men. We don't have enough honorable leaders to go around.

1. Good post. Another reason the war is an unforgivable stain on the U.S.
Iraq, a cradle of civilization - something George W. Bush and his minions took no notice of in carrying out their insanity. The historical legacy of Iraq belongs to the whole world, and what protections were provided?

"Stuff happens."

2. I saw that segment too
and I wondered why the fuck Georgie and Laura were there front and center, taking the moment away from those wonderful men and the author who pushed for their recognition. I know they won't, because their medals are long overdue, but they should have refused them as being hypocritical presented to them as they were by the Thief of Bagdad.

Kudos to the Monuments Men!!
