Republicans Using Overturning Roe for Fundraising Pitch
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 07:50 PM by pstans
Essential Estrogen has a post up about Sam Brownback using the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade as a fundraising pitch for his PAC.

Like many of you, I pray for the day that the highest court in the land overturns that decision, and this long dark night of abortion on demand comes to an end.

I don't understand how Rightwingers can think that simply overturning a law would stop all abortions. Until the Right actually gets serious about preventing abortions from happening in the first place. We must provide scientifically based sexual education, make contraception more available, helping people out of poverty, and ensuring people receive prenatal care and then the number of abortions will decline.

All the pro-life and anti-abortion talk from the Right is just a plea for money.

1. think about how many people would die
from back alley abortions? or how many more people would be worse off then they are due to unwanted births?

6. There are movements
that have been preparing for this eventuality. Groups of lay people who have learned and will teach others how to do safe, hygenic abortions.

There are also methods that will cause a non-surgical "spontaneous" miscarrage.

It would still be dangerous. But less so than era from 1900 to the 50's.
Before that time it was only illegal by certain methods in certain states.

And from the founding of our country until the mid-1800's abortion was legal in this country until quickening.

Spring that on your pro-lifer Christian Fundies. Watch their pea-brains explode.

7. The number of women dying from back-alley abortions
was one of the reasons abortion was legalized in the first place.

People grew weary of losing their cousins, nieces, daughters, sisters too the horrible effects of illegal abortions.

2. IMO, I don't think
the Reich (the ones that are in a position to do it) really want to overturn Roe v Wade. Its too good of a wedge issue to give up.

3. Nope, but it will make it one Hell of a lot more deadly.

4. It'll just make it more dangerous.
We really don't want to go back to the days of back alleys and dirty knives. Abortion is a medical procedure, and should be kept as safe and legal as it's been the last 35 years.

5. It won't stop abortions, no.
It will make it more difficult to get a safe one. And more expensive. And overall more deadly.

8. And that is exactly why I think a lot of them
want to make it illegal. So that women getting abortions will die and therefore pay for their "sin." That's the mindset of some of them. I once confronted an anti choice person on another board. Got her to admit that she thought abortion should be made illegal but that it wasn't her problem what happened to the unwanted baby, should it be born. Women, she said should be forced to have the baby and then forced to care for it with no help from her or anyone. This is the mindset we are dealing with.

9. It's never been about preventing abortion ...
it's always been an attempt to control (women's) sexuality.

Ostensibly preventing (the need for) abortion should be common ground with the right wing. I wish the Dems would frame it in that manner, so that the right wingers would be called on their real agenda. Because somehow it escapes the sleeping majority that right wingers don't care about people once they're born.

Agree 100% and would add to that list a political agenda that makes a strong middle class possible. When women feel they can realize their dreams and aspirations, they are less likely to have unwanted pregnancies.
