On April 5th, 1968, my dad was with our small town's police chief.
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 03:36 PM by RGBolen
There was an impromptu public service for Dr. King on main street, nothing big just a few ministers with bullhorns. My dad and the police chief were leaving the local diner when they saw a guy behind the building with a rifle. Upon asking what he was doing, and getting an answer that he was about to start killing, the police chief grabbed his gun threw it in the bed of his truck and told him "I'm not dealing with that shit here." Now the police chief wasn't any kind of forward social thinker, nor was he a big time racist as far as I ever knew or heard. The guy told him that he had more guns, at that point the police chief took his night stick out and with both hands reared back and "bam," right across the face. My dad said he had never seen so much blood or heard bones crack and hadn't seen anyone get killed but thought for sure the guy was going to die right there. No one was shot, and the guy didn't die, but he did have a crooked nose and a huge scar the rest of his life. Neither he or anyone in his family has ever spoken a word to me or as far as I know to anyone in my family, I doubt he ever spoke to the police chief again either.

9. I believe RGB "relates" lots of stuff.
Check out his post below, and then consider this thread as a whole.

He's claiming that the Chief of Police in a (nameless) small town
scarred a resident's face FOR LIFE...but no one can ever possibly
corroborate the story now. :eyes:

I grew up in a small town, and ain't NOBODY ever had a black eye there
without everyone else knowing how they got it within 72 hours.

But RGB is claiming that facial bones were broken, and the perp was
scarred forever? Seems like alot more folks than RGB would know about
the incident, if that were the case.

Kinda smells like an "I nailed this chick at summer camp, but you wouldn't
know her because she's from Canada" story, don't you think?

15. What the hell do you care
and why are you making such a big deal out of this? BFD. It's an interesting story nevertheless.

19. I value truth above lies. Don't you?
Do you not care when someone LIES to you?
I do.

And, frankly, I find LIES that pander to my predelictions
much more offensive than those that oppose them. It's been
my experience that the former are much more insidiously dangerous
that the latter.

The latter are as annoying as a common cold, and pass quickly;
while the former have a tendency to metastasize into virulent cancers
if not immediately diagnosed and expunged.

Do you not care when someone LIES to you?
I do.

25. I wouldn't have any links for most of what my father experienced.
What about your father, Dick? It's pretty unseemly to go around calling people out, unless you can prove that what they say is a lie.

5. No, all three of them are dead and my dad only told the story to the family

I don't know how many people the guy told it to, the police chief probably forgot about it by the end of the day.

10. Suuuuure- and the Chief was from Canada, so we wouldn't know him?
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 04:40 PM by dicksteele
And you don't remember the name of that "small town"
where a racist resident bore a facial scar until the day he died,
so we can't possibly find out if any current residents remember him? :eyes:

Ya didn't really think this one through very well, did ya?

14. Sure I have- first hand. I grew up in a small town- a town that HAD A NAME.
I've also seen basement-dwelling FIBBERS who tell TALL TALES on the internet,
and then disappear when folks ask them for corroborating details, knowhutImean?

So far, it looks to me like this thread falls into the second category.
And it's not the first time that a thread by this OP has done so.
Not even close.

13. No they were all from Louisiana, yes I know the name of the town I grew up in
I sure most everyone remembers him, there have never been more than about 3,000 people live in the town at one time. If there is anyone from there on DU they will recognize my name and know who I am, who my father was and who he was. I can't imagine they would feel the need to give out names either.

17. If it happened, tell us where. Spare us your question-ducking SPIN, and "put up or shut up".
You've already named the date, so NAME THE TOWN.
We can all find the names easily enough after that-
it's an INFORMATION AGE we live in, doncha know.

So, either NAME the town to prove your story actually happened,
or prove that you made it up by spinning and obfuscating some more.

It's time to shit or get off the pot, Mister Storyteller.

The team down in the basement here at DickSteeleLabs™ predicts that
your response is 85% likely to be a variation upon the theme of
"I don't verify my claims with you".

And the backup team in the sub-basement says there's a 90% chance
that the basement team is correct, after an analysis of your many
previous posts which have been proven to be utter fabrications.

Name it, RG. Name it or admit you made it all up.

7. There were riots in Baltimore
My grandparents owned a neighborhood store. My father and uncles had to stand guard outside with rifles to ensure that no one burned the store down. My grandparents sold the store a few months later and got the hell out of Baltimore.

8. There were riots in Chicago, too,
and all over the country, as many of you remember.

I was supposed to travel through Chicago to go home for my spring break from college. I couldn't do it. They kept my dorm open.

I remember the TV coverage so well.

The other thing I remember was seeing George Wallace run for President. Some of the TV commentators thought the election might be thrown into the house. The commentators in those days were actually well-informed about the process.

16. my dad worked as a shop steward for an auto dealer, in the repair
department, and said he'd never seen so many grown men cry at one time in his life.

He was pretty upset, himself.

23. My husband was almost attacked.
He's a fair skinned, green eyed, thin haired "black man". He was on his way home from work when he was surrounded by a group of angry young men. Some guys from the neighborhood saw what was happening. They intervened and escorted him home.

I hate to admit that I cannot remember the day of his assassination. I do remember the aftermath. There were so many assassinations. After JFK was killed, the killings seemed to be non stop in my mind. There seemed to be an assassins bullet turning every dream of hope into a nightmare.
