"...but the Bottom Line is..."
Now I don't know about you, but every time that that phrase comes out of some smarmy Rethug's mouth, like John Fund's or Freddie the Beetle Barnes', my stomach turns and I feel physically ill.

First, I can't stand the fact that it's OK for RWers to deny process: it is as if they say that I don't give a damn about what form of logic I ostensibly use to get to a point, you now are obliged to take my word for it that everything you were implying by your question is false and that my understanding and conclusions are true without question.

Second, it denies mealy-mouthed pseudo-liberal types any opportunity at discourse. Think Donna Brazile or any former New Republic Staffer who has sold his soul to the MSM Devil for some 'magic beans'. They just sit there like dopes and don't say, "That's all a lotta crap. You can't just gainsay everything by using the words "but the bottom line is..." and babbling on the with the RW blast-fax of the day. Good guys like KO or Rachel Maddow (when she's not busy kissing Tweety's behind) know how to counter these folks. Almost everyone else just sits there like the dunderheads which they are.

Third, the phrase gives credence to the "business model" of life..."Just show me the Bottom Line...Bottom Line Magazine...etc." This is no way to approach existence of humanity and certainly no way to approach building business in terms of goodwill and lasting success. It is the model which leads to mergers and acquisitions and the destruction of the culture and civilization as we know it.

1. It certainly trumps "Do the right thing".
Particularly amongst politicians who weigh every poll for the effect it might have on their chances of getting elected or re-elected.
