Ice rinks closed due to....Cold!
For crying out loud, it's Minnesota in the winter. We must be raising a bunch of wimps. This never happened when I was a kid growing up there.

Ice rinks and warming houses in many suburbs, including Hopkins, Minnetonka, St. Louis Park and Apple Valley, will be closed this weekend because of the cold, but some may reopen on Monday. Minneapolis public rinks will be closed today, but may reopen Sunday or Monday. Call 612-313-7708 to find out. And the St. Paul Parks and Recreation Department plans to keep its facilities open unless the windchill falls below - 25.

1. And it used to get a lot colder here, too. I don't ever remember the ice rinks closing.
But maybe it's because the parks no longer have enough money to keep the warming houses heated.

4. Or global warming; someone wants to keep the heating elements for higher priority reasons...

2. -8 with a windchill of -30, you go out there for a few minutes.
I wonder what a ben_meyers flavored frozen lolly might taste like...

3. Heh heh
That's funny. I have a good friend up that way who calls me a wimp because of my thin southern blood. She said that we'd go ice skating if I came up there this weekend. I'll have to give her hell about the wimps up there afraid of a little cold. (of course I would freeze my butt off but at least I can give her a little hell!)

6. Closing down schools in Nebraska because of a possibility of heavy
Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 01:00 PM by acmavm
snow never used to happen either. Of course I'm snarfy because closing down the schools even if it was a blizzard rarely happened. My Mom use to try to make me wear jeans under my dresses (no pants allowed back then). The first second I was out of sight, I whipped those things off and didn't put 'em back on until I was almost home. (All us girls did that.) Talk about some cold, bright pink legs.

Used to do the same thing with my braids too. Although I always got caught at that one. I couldn't get 'em back in right.

edit: spelling

7. And everybody respected the Vikings
when they played at Metropolitan Stadium. They've been wusses since they played under a roof.

10. And as Armen Terzian found out
You could get a lot of booze into that stadium tucked into your snowmobile suit. I was at the "Hail Mary" game when he got hit.

Ref survived bottle hit with long career

Armen Terzian died in 1989 at the age of 74. He was an NFL official for 21 seasons, then became an instant replay official in the mid-1980s. His name will be remembered not for any blown calls, but because he was belted in the head with a half-full Corby's whisky bottle in the final seconds of the Hail Mary game.

9. It is colder than a welldiggers ass outside
Even my apartment the temp is at 55°, with the heat on full blast. AND I'm in St. Paul.

I'm avoiding going out today because with the windchill it feels like -30. And that's in the new windchill index. It's more like -40 in the old scale.
