Poll question: Has the time come to restrict campaign-related posts to one of the two GD boards?
Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 01:58 AM by JackRiddler
In the 2004 primary season there came a point when DU officially restricted campaign-related posts to the "GD : Politics" forum, leaving the "GD" forum for all other subjects. Has that time arrived again?

Please kick so others can also vote.

(Edited to eliminate an unwanted smiley.)

2. Yes
Divide it up. The discussions that aren't about the primaries are being kicked of the page and not being seen while the page fills up with catfights.

11. That's Why GD-P Was Set Up
A result of the Dean-Kucinich-Clark wars of 2004. Now is there a forum on here you don't need to wear body armor? Lately kevlar and a hazmat suit are more the required attire.

4. Other: OMFG YES! Something....ANYTHING.
I see 20 different posts with one word variants (usually a name) and frankly I've not read one of them. Not even about the people I'm interested in voting for.

That leaves oh...this post and the scrapbooking forum.

5. Yes! We are GDP after all, not GD -- those in the other place shouldn't be able...
to talk about the campaign. That'll just make it clear; we are SO the cool forum -- institute this rule, and GD will be as tumbleweed-worthy as the Knitting and Quilting Group.

want to "spread their seed" in it every 30 seconds..or every time their candidate smiles :P

6. The original name of GD-P was General Discussion-PRIMARY. It was created in 2004 specifically as THE
place to post candidate threads. Why don't more DUers remember this?

I FERVENTLY wish that all candidate threads would be confined to GD-P. I realize that there will always be some grey areas -- for example; threads about how the corporate media skews the campaigns, and such -- but as I recall, there were some fairly good guidelines in 2004 and they worked fairly well.

I suppose it's more difficult now, since there's been such a free-for-all going on for so long, but I sure would love to see the separation that was enforced in 2004.

getting pretty tedious and really isn't accomplishing anything but anger and flames. I rather see GD used for GD, silly me.

13. Absolutely
the flamage is so bloody dull and given the differences between the main candidates are so minute, completely hysterically ridiculous also.

If we can quarantine the posts of those who think "my fav imperialist capitalist is better than your fav imperial capitalist" passes for political debate, maybe we can actually discuss something important rather than which corporate monkey will pretend to run the world for the next 4 years.

22. No. This is Democratic Underground and we're deep in a political season.
It wouldn't make any sense to relegate the very thing (politics) that created this community to some other forum.

The campaigns and the primaries are very much a part of the general discussion right now.

23. What does this mean? DU has a history...
of separating threads started to solicit on behalf of candidates into the GD : P forum.

DU has a membership that would like to see that, based on many other statements and threads and polls besides this one.

People want to talk about politics without being forced to relate everything to the campaigns.

And your apparent need to plaster a candidate's face everywhere can still be accomodated - you will be able to start threads in GD : P, and of course nothing will stop you from responding to threads in all other forums including GD.

26. I see by your profile that you apparently weren't here in 2004. GDP was created in 2004 SPECIFICALLY
to be the forum for candidate posts. The original name of GD-P was GD-PRIMARY, because it was THE designated forum for primary vote campaigning.

It worked quite well. GD had room for all kinds of NON-horse race discussions, and GD-P thrived -- there being no shortage of candidate advocates wanting to duke it out with each other day after day.

Having the forum separation probably saved DU from imploding altogether back in 2004.

GD-P was created for a very good reason -- and it WORKED!

33. actually some of us don't view the pony show as important
Political discussion goes WAY beyond the irrelevancy over which individual gains party nomination.

The issues are much broader than people with identical views/histories scrambling to be the figure head that opposes another (almost identical) parties figure head.

The primaries (and elections in general) are simply circuses - some of us would like to avoid the clowns

and like Israel, 911, & guns.. these threads get locked & banished..

Either 86 all these candidate-spam posts to the candidate's forum or GD-P or give us an easier way to "weed the garden".. Maybe a single page "delete this post" ..where they are all listed and we can "hide" them all at once??????
