Impeachment Resolution Introduced to University of Arkansas Student Government
For Immediate Release:

Resolution Calling for Impeachment Introduced to ASG Senate

Fayetteville, AR – A resolution calling for a referendum on impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney was introduced to the ASG Senate Chair today.

The resolution, authored and introduced by Senator Abel Tomlinson and Jacob Holloway, calls for the ASG Senate to vote to support the sponsorship of a student referendum on impeachment of Bush and Cheney. If the referendum resolution is passed by the ASG Senate and supported by the student body, the resolution and a letter will be sent to Speaker of the House of Nancy Pelosi, House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, Congressman John Boozman, Congressman Mike Ross, Congressman Marion Berry, and Congressman Vic Snyder urging them to initiate impeachment proceedings.

The charges in the resolution against Bush and Cheney include misleading Congress and the American public by manipulating intelligence to justify an illegal “war of aggression” against Iraq, authorizing illegal warrantless wiretapping of the computers and telephones of all Americans, authorizing the use of torture, and conspiracy to strip Americans of Constitutional rights by ordering unreasonable searches and seizures, indefinite detentions without access to legal counsel, without charge and without opportunity to appear before a civil judicial officer to challenge the detention based merely on discretionary designation by the President of any U.S. citizen as an “enemy combatant”. All charges of which are in violation of numerous national and international laws.

The resolution argues that these violations of laws are indeed harmful to all American citizens including students at the University of Arkansas. The direct cost of the war is currently at approximately $500 billion and indirect costs such as for long-term healthcare and disability for wounded troops and added interest to our national debt entail hundreds of billions more. This money could have been spent providing massive increases in higher education funding.

The national security interests of all American citizens including U of A students has also been severely harmed by handicapping our military readiness due to overextension and damaged recruitment capability, and from decades of expected political and security blowback created by the war. Furthermore, the illegal war and human rights abuses authorized by the administration, such as torture, have contributed to the fueling of global hatred toward Americans and making it far more difficult for students to travel abroad in peace and safety.

Resolution X
Author: Senator Abel Tomlinson and Senator Jacob Holloway
Sponsor: Senator Abel Tomlinson

Referendum to Petition the Impeachment of George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney
Whereas: President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney conspired with others to intentionally mislead the American public by manipulating and cherry picking intelligence regarding the threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and Iraqi connections to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in order to justify an unprovoked “war of aggression”, which is a war crime and the “supreme international crime”, in violation of the Nuremburg Charter, Geneva Convention (2), the Uniform Code of Military Justice and article 2(4) of the UN Charter; and

Whereas: George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney severely harmed the national security interests of the United States and its citizens, including U of A students by laying the groundwork for the death of 3926 US military service members and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi citizens after aggressive invasion; the loss of approximately $500 billion in direct war costs and hundreds of billions more in long-term healthcare and disability costs for wounded troops and added interest on our national debt, money that could be spent providing massive increases in funding for higher education; the loss of United States military readiness due to overextension and damaged recruitment capability; and decades of political and security blowback created by the war; and

Whereas: George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney conspired with others to order the National Security Agency to conduct electronic surveillance of the computers and telephones of all American civilians without seeking warrants from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review in violation of Title 50 United States Code, Section 1805 and the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution prohibiting unreasonable searches and seizures; and

Whereas: George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney conspired with others to commit the torture of prisoners, with approximately 100 prisoners dying in American custody and 46 of those confirmed torture homicides, in violation of the Federal Torture Act Title 18 United States Code, Section 113C, the UN Torture Convention, Uniform Code of Military Justice and the Geneva Convention, which under Article VI of the Constitution are part of the “supreme Law of the Land”; and

Whereas: George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney conspired with others to strip American citizens, including U of A students, of constitutional rights by ordering unreasonable searches and seizures, indefinite detention without access to legal counsel, without charge and without opportunity to appear before a civil judicial officer to challenge the detention based merely on discretionary designation by the President of any U.S. citizen as an “enemy combatant” in violation of several laws within the US Constitution ; and

Whereas: George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney acted contrary to their public trust, subversive of constitutional government and the rule of law, and to the injury of the United States citizens including the University of Arkansas student body, especially by fueling hatred toward Americans and making it more difficult for students to travel abroad in peace and safety; then

Be it therefore resolved: That the ASG Senate recognize that the deeds of George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney, by violating their oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution and engaging in high crimes and misdemeanors, warrant impeachment and their removal from office.

Be it further resolved: That the ASG Senate sponsor a referendum for the U of A student body to decide on this resolution and if passed, the ASG Senate lobby for the United States Congress to initiate proceedings for the investigation of George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney, to the end that they may be impeached and removed from office.

Be it further resolved: That upon passage of the referendum, the ASG is required to write a letter to the Speaker of the House of Nancy Pelosi, House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, Congressman John Boozman, Congressman Mike Ross, Congressman Marion Berry, and Congressman Vic Snyder, including a copy of this resolution and its adoption by the U of A ASG, and request that this petition be delivered to and entered in the United States Congressional Journal.
