First, in which ways is 2008 enough different to ensure that the unrest that occurred in the penumbra of the Convention will not occur this time?

Second, in which ways are Denver's institutions, Government, CopShop, enough unlike Chicago under Mayor Daley Sr. that the unrest that occurred in the penumbra of the Convention will not occur this time?


Third, is there a sensitizing issue, such as immigration, that might intensify the level of tension? One that might be kindled in either the convention, or its protests?

1. Denver's Mayor Hickenlooper is probably one of the nicest people in government

He's undertaken a large program to help the homeless which has proven pretty successful (among other things) and has a very high approval rating in a liberal city. I don't think we or anybody else has anything to fear from him.

I think our nation is so divided, fearful, and angry that a small event may unleash a big conflict.

One point I watch for on the horizon is another large gas price spike.

I think if we start down the road of 1968, we will find ourselves wishing our turmoil was as orderly and humane.
