John Edwards is pi$$ing off all the right people.
by jedreport, Sat Jan 12, 2008 at 03:52:16 PM EST

"...if anyone's in doubt: yes, Edwards is pissing off the right people." -- grannyhelen

As the primary process continues, amidst the daily barrage of broadsides fired from one campaign onto another, it's worth remembering that John Edwards is still talking about real issues.

John Edwards' campaign isn't about him. It's about us. It's about taking back power from the wealthy elites who want to run this country and putting it in our hands. It's about finally taking on the corporations that dominate more and more of the American economy. It's about challenging the system.

And it's pissing off the all right people.

Let's start with Rupert Murdoch. My, how John Edwards has pissed that man off. Sure, Murdoch hates John Edwards because Edwards led the way amongst presidential candidates in pulling out of the Faux-news debates, helping expose his propaganda network for what it is.

But he hates John Edwards even more because John Edwards has spoken out publicly against the monopolization of America's media outlets into the hands of a small number of plutocrats like Murdoch. Murdoch's media empire fired back, calling Edwards a hypocrite, leaking confidential information, all in an attempt to smear John Edwards to avoid talking about the real issues. Just look at the bile and vitriol spilling from these New York Post headlines. Two of the most savage attacks were directed as much as Nataline Sarkisyan and Elizabeth Edwards' as they were at Edwards.

Of course, Rupert Murdoch isn't the only right-wing corporatist to go after John Edwards with personal attacks. Take the far-right Washington Times, for example. In the view of the editorial pages, Edwards is a "widely scorned" "sanctimonius hypocrite." All in all, the Times says, "Mr. Edwards's rank hypocrisy is boundless." On the bright side, he's "well-coifed" but "not ready for prime time."

- snip -

With the nation's economy increasingly becoming a volatile issue in the presidential campaign, the president of the United States Chamber of Commerce is about to issue one very tough promise to spend millions of dollars against candidates deemed to be anti-business. (Are you listening John Edwards?)

National Review, the rag read by the nation's conservative elite, just absolutely can't stand John Edwards. Byron York asks the probing question: "Is Edwards a phony?" Talk about expensive haircuts -- York knows a thing or two about those, I might guess. Rich Lowry affectionately (sic) calls John Edwards "The Hater" and accuses him of "unbridled hostility."

The grand-daddy of the entire crew of corporate warriors, one William F. Buckley, actually is an exception to the "if you fear, smear" rule of thumb. He understands that populism is a grave and serious danger to the plutocracy. So he does something almost unimaginable amongst these reactionaries: he actually engages Edwards on the issues. Sort of.

17. Let Us Hope Edwards Does Not Get The Benazir Bhutto Treatment.
.
This election is the people versus the corporations. This is for keeps with no do overs. Do not think for a moment the corporations will play fair.

Edwards is not welcomed. If all the corporations do is not allow him to be seen or heard, Edwards will be getting off easy. Expect the worst.

23. Would it be possible to fight these hate critics by
compiling and maintaining a list of the criticisms = and who said them? The purpose would be to turn it around - humiliate them, cut them off, expose them, highlight how ridiculous it all is.

It appears that their modus operandi is to start at the bottom and berate up. If they can knock off the candidates from the bottom up, they will have done their job well. We don't have to allow them to get away with this again.

In looking back at what was done to Al Gore, the same people are attacking Edwards with the same ridiculous focus. With Al, it was his stiff neck, his shirts, his lock box, etc. NO ONE countered them in an organized way. They had free rein. Talk about repetetive childish methodology. Imagine all the air time devoted to it. Reltentless was their key. They went all out to demean him and create contempt.

They have started up again. If we had a list that we could cut and paste as it is updated, we could send it to editors, send it to the networks, send it to the pundits - and, if nothing else, simply let them know that they are repeating themselves and looking stupid. It can be used to counter lies. It can be used to let them know how boring it all is. We can turn it around to point to We can give it to Edwards supporters so that they can be ready. Given the brains and the wit on this forum - there could be comeback quips in addition to the facts.

I would like to see Edwards counter it a little. Though it seems that Eleizbeth Edwards is not afraid to challenge anyone, the pundits and their Republican-corporate network hosts could cut her off quickly.

I think a counter offensive would be as effective as some other activist tasks and initiatives.

It is up to us to not let what happened to Al Gore, happen to him.

(I'm surprised at myself - it looks like I'm leaning towards Edwards as Al Gore and Feingold are not there and no one, including the DLC, will allow Kucinich in.)

Perhaps to be democratic (lower case d), supporters of the other candidates should also do this.

The best question is to ask in call-ins and lttes is this - in what other country are there five Republican networks and no Democratic networks? In what other country do paid hosts, paid experts, guest experts - all Republican operatives - get presence on a tv screen to do character and appearance assassinations of Democrats - to the world?

31. No, not in the constitution, but in the eyes of the law.
Corporate personhood serves as a sield against personal liability. i.e., corporate shield. A corporation has legal standing under the law; it can sue an individual or another corporation. Except for some very few exceptions the individuals making the decisions om behalf of the corporate entity are shielded from liability.

33. Go read "Unequal Protection" by Thom Hartmann...
It lays out the whole sordid history of corporate personhood in America. Great book.

IMHO, Edwards is the only one who seems to realize what's really at stake here. I don't think Obama "gets it", and I think Clinton has sold us out. Either would, of course be better than any of the republicans, but if we aren't willing to fight them as hard as possible, what the hell ARE we doing?

John Edwards: $7 Million Dollars In One Day - Make It Happen Hotlist
by KingOneEye
Sun Jan 13, 2008 at 08:01:30 PM PST

There's been a lot of talk in these parts about how the media is shutting John Edwards out of the race. He has been excluded from polling. His campaign events have not been covered. Other candidates with less to show for themselves receive more attention. Etc.....

All of the these things are true. And all of the solutions I've seen have merit. We definitely need to put pressure on the media to cover this election fairly. But the media is probably not going to alter course and suddenly exhibit a journalistic integrity that they haven't even thought about since their freshman year of college. They need to be given a reason to change course; a reason that fits their definition of news.

So either Edwards could engage in a high speed police chase with Britney's kids on his lap and a missing white girl in the trunk, or he could raise $7 million dollars in one day.
