I got a couple on a week-long white water rafting trip last year. Taking a searing hot pocket knife blade to your own skin will test the nerves.

But in D.C.? :wtf:

The low temperature for the day was also a record high 56 degrees. it is expected to reach 66 degrees again today Jan 8, 2008 also breaking a record before the rains are expected to come in with a cold front that will still yield at or above average temperatures for the rest of the week.

16. Seventy one here in Mid Missouri
And while this may seem like a pleasant surprise to most, and believe me, I've take advantage of the past few days of warm weather working outside, people need to be aware that this warm weather can actually be harmful. Many fruit trees need X amount of hours of below freezing temperatures, otherwise they will not fruit anywhere close to normal, if at all. As an orchardist this past year has been hell, from the severe cold snap in April(that robbed me of my first pear crop), to the drought, to the ice storm a month ago that ravaged trees. I don't need anything else odd or out of the ordinary, just a nice, normal progression of the seasons with enough water this summer. I know, I know, I'm asking for a lot aren't I.

29. I watch very little news on TV anymore
but do occasionally turn on News 10. I went out and raked leaves today. Our leaves fell so late here is Syracuse that we didn't get our leaves picked by the city hardly at all, the majority fell after the last pick up day in mid October.

For those that don't know, here in Syracuse, the city picks up leaves and other landscape stuff once a month. They chip it all and take it to a place in the city to compost it. You can go at any time and then pick up the compost for free for your garden, you just bring a container and shovel it in.

24. last week it was really cold
There are many indicators that we're in a climate change crisis, but anecdotal reports of the daily temperature aren't among them. I'm sure that last week, Freepers were hooting and hollering about how cold weather makes Al Gore look dumb.

We need to get beyond finger-pointing whenever there happens to be a hot or a cold spell.

I completely agree. Warm spells and cold snaps in themselves are not evidence of climate change.

Last week, barely made it above freezing for several days near Winston-Salem, NC and today, it's 68 (average high is about 47). But wacky temperatures aren't so out of the ordinary here in winter.

38. Well, this actually isn't from global warming
Global warming is on the order of a degree or two per decade; it's not what makes us occasionally have warm days in the winter. What does that is the stochastic nature of weather.

41. pointing to above or below average temps on a given day is a bad way to prove climate change
Yes, its unusually warm in many parts of the Northeast today. In Syracuse, its around 30 degrees above the normal high and probably a record for Jan 7. But the record high for the month of January in Syracuse is even warmer -- 70 degrees -- and that happened 58 years ago. (The record low for January was set over 40 years ago).

You can't prove anything by looking at short term temperature fluctuations and doing so only enboldens the climate crisis deniers. You have to look at long term trends -- for example, the fact in Syracuse, for the 31 days in January, the coldest date on record for each day has occurred 11 times within in the past 15 years.

A January thaw is a normal yearly event around here (NH)!

It was 12 degrees here just a week ago today!

The weather on any particular day has almost no bearing on the average temperature change - which we all know is increasing! I remember a 75 degree day up here in January where I played golf long before global warming was an issue. Someone always screams "global warming" when we have a warm day in winter - I can't help but chuckle.

52. Goddammitt. I don't let the knuckledraggers slide for a comment like that ...
It's called an aberration. Temperature goes up. Temperature goes down. Hot today, cold tomorrow. It's been like that forever. Here in Indiana, the temp was in the single digits two weeks ago. Today it was mid 60s.

Global warming is not about how hot it is or isn't today, or what the trends have been in one place. It's the overall trends. Globally.

Please, please, please. Do us all a favor and stop making "global warming" comments every time it gets warm.

they happen to be records occuring over long time periods? This isn't a general warm then cold period, but figures into the trend because it is a record warmth. We have seen record warmths occuring in the summer too and the records keep getting broken meaning trends are going up. So by the definition of some here saying average trends define it then an upward surge over the course of a year would indicate global warming and not just cold front/warm front cycles. This is what we are seeing is record heat during all seasons on average over the course of years that, some had claimed here, la nina and el nino won't account for. You would be right in saying a record heat is not evidence in and of itself for a day or 2, but when these record breaking temps occur more frequently over time it does mean a global warming trend. It wasn't just California or even just the US experiencing these higher temps with records being broken so some can keep pooh poohing it.
