Scotsman On Death Row May Be Freed
TOLEDO, Ohio -- At nearly every turn, Ken Richey's attempts to win his release from two decades on death row have been blocked.
Now the Scotsman who came within an hour of being executed for starting a fire that killed a 2-year-old girl - an act he insists he didn't do - hopes his day of freedom is finally here.
Richey has agreed to enter a plea deal Monday that will allow him to accept a sentence of time already served and leave the United States, his attorney said.
The agreement comes after an appeals court overturned his death sentence last year. And it will allow Richey, a U.S.-British citizen, to go home to Scotland without admitting that he had anything to do with the fire.
....
The court overturned his conviction and sentence, saying expert testimony could have contended that the fire was an accident and not intentionally set.
