Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 03:23 PM by Stuart G
Let's say that for this week you would plan events and chores that might change the landscape in some way, for the better.
..It can be anything you think would help. And you can define the landscape too, Political,
Environmental, Social Service..or whatever..
......... Given your time schedule and constraints?

..I could honestly use these ideas, because I have quite a deal of free time ahead, and need some ideas. Answers and discussion of those answers by people I respect would be appreciated....
and of course.......Thank You,,,,,,,,,,

6. depends
Do we want to see real change, or feel good about ourselves because we have done something good?

Where does change start?

I recommend spending an entire week visiting eldercare facilities and impoverished schools and homeless shelters near you. You will never ask "what can I do?" again.

Attacking the terrible suffering in this country and doing something about it requires a collective solution, and a political solution, not individual volunteer activities. Very, very few have their eyes open to the suffering in this country and very few are strongly advocating sweeping political solutions. Advocacy for broad and sweeping political solutions is what is needed, and the prerequisite to that is to see first hand how the people are living who have been tossed aside, and to get it through our heads that most of the people in the country have been tossed aside - made invisible and forgotten as we pursue some fantasy of middle class suburban success that is increasingly farther and farther out of reach for most people.

If it seems to anyone that most of the people are living the good suburban life, then they are living in a very small circle and need to get out and see the reality of modern America. We cannot do anything about a problem if we do not understand the problem, and the problem is not that there are merely a few unfortunates suffering whom we can help a little out of the goodness of our hearts. The problem is that our "winners" success-above-all ethic is leaving millions of people behind, neglected, forgotten, isolated and hurting.
