Wife of minutemen founder commits a crime

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The wife of an Ozarks Minutemen founder is charged with filing a false report after her story about being raped and shot by three Hispanic men was found to be untrue.

Angela Wilburn was charged Thursday with filing a false report. She was released from the Greene County Jail after posting a $500 bond. Her husband Brian Wilburn said his wife made "a big mistake."

Brian Wilburn helped form the Ozarks Minutemen, a community group similar to the anti-illegal immigration Minutemen Civil Defense Corps. He said his wife's actions had nothing to do with the Minutemen.

Angela Wilburn was investigating suspicious noises at their home near Brookline when she accidentally shot herself in the knee.

The release also identified Angela Wilburn as the woman who on June 6 reported that three Spanish-speaking men in a van tried to abduct her.

In that incident, which later led to a Crime Stoppers bulletin and statewide alert, Wilburn told authorities she was walking on Farm Road 156 west of West Bypass when a white Chevrolet van passed her, then turned around and pulled up beside her a few minutes later.

She said a man in the front passenger seat tried to force her into the van, but she was able to fight him off and flee on foot.

Arnott said the reported abduction attempt is still under investigation.
