For you all that read the Riverbend story about the rape of the Sunni woman by Shi'a police officers, or heard the story on NPR last night about why this charge is so grave re the tensions between Sunni and Shi'a, the police officers accused have already been cleared. The alleged rape took place Sunday night. That was quick.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Three officers of the Shiite-dominated police force have been cleared of allegations that they raped a Sunni woman in their custody, a government statement said Tuesday.

The 20-year-old married woman said she was assaulted after police commandos took her into custody Sunday in the western Baghdad neighborhood of Amil, accusing her of helping insurgents. She said she was taken to a police garrison and raped.

"After the allegations have been proven to be false, the prime minister has ordered that the officers accused be rewarded," it said without elaborating.

An ivestigation that took less than 24 hours on a charge of rape? Utterly sickening. However, it's possible the government may not get away with this. I heard that she was rescued by American troops. I don't know what's true at this point regarding that, but I don't believe for a moment that a Sunni woman would have gone public about the rape if it didn't happen.

Yes, such thinking does exist in Iraq..where the victims of rape are often murdered or they kill themselves
