There was a thread here a few days ago that I thought which made a very good argument. I'd like to add my two cents to the OP's arguments.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph... In the upcoming primary season, the Democratic voters can do one of two things. They can (1) select the next president of the USA, or (2) they can vote in a way to make themselves feel really good.
They can NOT do both.
Too often in my voting life, the Party of Jefferson and Jackson has contented itself in doing number (2). Such happened in 1972, 1984, 1988, and especially in 2004. For reasons I can't understand, the majority of these good people decide they had rather send a message to their philosophic opponents than to send a president to Washington.
It's what I think of as a variation of the "redneck credo" which goes -- "ain't no sumabitch gonna tell me what to do". It seems that these voter decide that showing the world how open minded and tolerant they are -- and how in control of their party they are -- is far more important than gaining control of the American government.
I like Obama and would like to see him get any office the next Democratic President wants him to have. But let's face facts -- Obama will not be the next President of the USA. To nominate him is to give the 2008 presidential election to the Republicans -- along with majorities in the House and Senate. To destroy other Democratic candidates in order to force his nomination will only help the GOP. By letting Bush be re-elected in 2004, we gave away two Supreme Court seats. Does anybody want to give away some more ?
Say what you will about the Republicans, they are masters of down and dirty politics. Remember Michael Dukakis in 1988 ? Do you also remember Lee Atwater ? Dukakis was a good man. But Atwater took a picture of Willie Horton and promised George H W Bush -- "I'll hang Willie around that little bastards neck and people will think they are siamese twins". And he did. We lost two Supreme Court seats due to that, too.
Atwater is dead -- but there are some GOP operatives that will make him look like a nice guy. Imagine what they will do with Obama -- and the thin majority we now have in Congress.
Here are a few facts. The ghost of Lee Atwater is praying Obama will be the Democratic nominee.
Obama, through no fault of his own is --
(1) Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Barack Obama, Sr. (born in Nyanza Province, Kenya) and Ann Dunham (born in Wichita, Kansas)
(2) His mother married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian foreign student and Muslim, with whom she had one daughter.
(3) The family moved to Jakarta in 1967, and Obama became a Muslim.
(4) There Obama attended local schools from ages 6 to 10.
(5) Obama then returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents while attending Punahou School from 5th grade until his graduation in 1979.
Gee whiz ! You mean he has actually lived on the main land for 28 years and wants to be President ?
When the GOP gets through explaining how Obama is a foreign Muslim who has no American roots, how many votes will he get ? It doesn't matter because he will not get enough. The Republican Noise machine will turn out people who have never voted.
Let's not throw away another two Supreme Court seats. Let's not send the American people another well meaning candidate who wants to "report for duty". Let's send them a man or woman who wants to clean up Washington DC. And who can do it !
Another loss and we may not have a party to vote for next time.
