| This nose up look is why I can't stand Obama |
When he does that, like during the debate, I get all icky. Really looks like the know it all professor who really only knew how to study and take tests better than the rest of us. But Hillary reminds me of looking up to my Grandma when I really really wanted that stuffed animal on the shelf at FAO. Hillary is My 44

Doesn't he realize that tie symbolizes the infamous International Union of left-handed, transvestite, myopic, porno-reading, pot-smoking, tap-dancing, reformation-minded, slightly deaf, retired dutch windmill repairmen and dike salesmen? Just wait til Penn does a poll on the ties that Obama wears. Then, he'll see. Boy, will he get it then.
| 73. That does it -- another anti-tap dancing thread! |
I'm sick of this shit, and I won't put up with it. Any time people disagree with something, they think they can compare it to tap dancing in derogatory terms. Tap dancers are people too, and don't deserve to be lumped in with such as the myopic. Sometimes I want to quit this damn board when I see screeds of intolerance like this.
Tap dancers are always happy and smiling (except maybe Savion Glover.) When it rains, they sing in it, and I'm sick and tired of this incessant bullshit!

| 115. I'll add my time steps to that. |
| 180. Well, I'm here to support my fellow left handed, myopic, transvestites |
that are porno-reading, pot-smoking, reformation-minded and slightly deaf. Ok, maybe I'm not left handed and the transvestite thing was just that one Halloween; pot smoking I quit about 25 years ago. But I am reformation minded and Renaissance minded as well and I do have a bit of a hearing problem in my left ear. But other than that, I am really pissed off about that darn tie.
| 204. and tap-dancers? well, (tap tap tap) we're waiting. |
| 4. Which one is more likely to open the books on BushInc as president? |
THAT should be any Democratic citizens' main concern at this point in our history.
| 13. Well it sure ain't gonna be Obama |
He's the Captain of the "Get along gang"
I don't think any of them will --but out of the pack the two most likely will be:
Kucinich --'cos that's who he is.
or
Hillary -- 'cos Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. (This is the woman who practically coined the phrase "Right Wing Conspiracy")
| 23. Guess you missed all that protection Bill gave to Poppy Bush throughout the 90s? |
when there were so many outstanding matters of Poppy's involvements in illegal operations. http://consortiumnews.com/2006/111106.html You may also have believed that Marc Rich was pardoned for being just another wealthy tax evader wrongfully charged when he was actually another operative of Poppy Bush's BCCI and IranContra ventures. Yes - Clinton pardoned an IranContra figure for Poppy.
Bill isn't running for President.
His better-half is.
| 32. Uhm. She won't open the books because Bill's legacy is now contingent on protecting |
Poppy's secrecy and privilege.
You think Hillary wants the public to know how much Bill did to protect Poppy?
Hard to explain how she didn't know the extent of the protection given throughout that time.
| 35. I was under the impression |
That we were talking about Hillary and Junior.
I'm voting for Hillary, Bill isn't running in case you didn't notice, and Poppy was President 16 years ago.
| 48. You think any of Poppy's operations stopped in the 90s? BushInc grew STRONGER in the 90s |
I'm voting for HILLARY Clinton.
| 61. Yeah - because she didn't know ANY of this was going on and she'll open the books |
Edited on Fri Dec-14-07 01:23 PM by blm
on BushInc so her husband's legacy as Poppy's protector will be shown for all the world to see?
Sure she will.
| 63. She hasn't been President yet either. |
| 67. Bill's legacy isn't HER legacy? Nice trick to try and pull off. I didn't know ANYTHING |
Edited on Fri Dec-14-07 01:25 PM by blm
about Bill's protection of Bush1 shows she is not observant, not comprehensive, has no sense of discernment and shouldn't be president.
| 70. I didn't say she knows nothing. |
I said she hasn't been President yet.
She's not her husband in case you haven't noticed.
She's her own woman.
You don't know what she would do as President, and saying she would exactly the same thing as Bill is not winning your argument, it's baseless speculation.
Bill Clinton's legacy is not Hillary Clinton's legacy.
| 83. Believing she has no interest in protecting her husband's legacy is baseless |

What court is that? What's the accusation here?
That wives always do what they're husbands do?
| 159. HAHA - you want to claim she was oblivious to the protection granted Poppy Bush? |
That's a GREAT quality to have as president - someone who never noticed for 8 yrs in the WH that her husband had policies of protecting BushInc throughout the 90s.
Guess he never shared his foreign policy discussions with her then since they usually involved continuing Poppy's policies.

It's quite obvious from the lighting that the klieg lights are above them.
Not below them.
The angle has more to do with the fact that the candidates are on a stage, and the photographer would have been in the audience.

| It is ridiculous. And, you're probably right about the shooter |
but look carefully at the angle of both heads. Those noses and chins seem to be seeking a more comfortable, middle place between the light from above and below. I have no way of knowing if there were lights on stage other than the photographers' flashes -- in themselves, they can make you pull your chin up and away.
And, then someone on a message board reads it as arrogance. Oh, my.

| 33. I'm both a public speaker and a photographer |

You say, "THE REPUBLICANS ARE GONING TO SAY OBAMA LOOKS DUMB! THAT IS MY PIONT!!!!!" To which I now reply, "Good. It'll work about as well as it did for you in this thread."
Ironic that you claim you're worried about people voting for looks (or for that matter, charisma of any sort), since Clinton polls worst on charisma of the Big Three.

The point of this post is it is exactly the kind of crap we will face in the general. Calling it foreshadowing or satire doesn't explain the ubersincere "looking up to my Grandma" passage, where you point out that Obama doesn't superficially resemble your ancestors. If it's meant to be a mockery of racism and anti-intellectualism in the future tense, why does the Goofus and Gallant caption compare Obama to your candidate and not someone he'd face in a general election?

Because first off, college professors don't really know anything—all those years they invest in getting fancy degrees an' stuff don't make them any better educated than anybody else! Second, I'm pretty sure you win the prize for stupidest fucking post of the week. Congratulations!

I simply cannot STAND the ties Sen. Obama wears. They look so -- I don't know -- so much like what some rich Senator would wear. I would never vote for someone who wears ties like THAT!

The point of this post is it is exactly the kind of crap we will face in the general. The average non-thinking republican and many independents do base their vote on looks, snark from Limbaugh and lots of other crap.
If any of you think Obama is immune then I'm sorry for outcome that Rove has planned.

But I'm NOT going to bash you like my fellow DUers on this thread... sheesh... someone must have pissed in the collective DU Wheaties today.
I don't like that look on Obama either, but Hillary is too pro-war for my taste.
See! My opinion, although different from yours, can coexist nicely in the same thread! What a concept! I don't have to call you an idiot, or tell you where your faults are to disagree! Smashing good time!

"Yes, I chucked a big ball of mud in your face. But I wasn't really chucking a big ball of mud in your face.. I was doing with the noble purpose of demonstrating what the mud-chucking Republicans will do in the general. Here, let me demonstrate it some more"

| 113. Hillary smiled with the patience |
Hillary smiled with the patience of a grandmother stuck babysitting bratty kids as reporters barraged her with breathless questions about whether Obama's drug history is the sort of surprise she's talking about and whether she thinks general-election voters might punish him for it. But Hillary wasn't biting. "I am only talking about myself," she insisted, looking unusually resplendent in a dark suit with a red blouse and multicolored necklace. I'm not sure about the necklace. full story: http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_stump/archive/2007/1...

Gosh darn these fiendish rogue campaign staffers! They're out of control! Meanwhile, it stays in the news. How handy. Personally, my problem with Obama on all that isn't that he's been honest about doing drugs in his youth- he gets props for that- my problem is that he is too hypocritical to take the next step and say it's time to rethink the idiotic, $40 Billion-a-year drug war that isn't working, even as it is filling our prisons with non-violent offenders.
| 143. We agree on something |
but that is one of the unmentionables along with gun control
| 185. Actually, the lesson in both issues is that there is a strong "Mind Your Own Damn Business" streak |
in the US Populace.
The GOP is coming unhinged because the religious loonies who run that party are insane kooks who want to jail gays and outlaw the birth control pill. If we would stand up strong for across-the-board notions of personal freedom- getting government out of people's bodies, bedrooms, and bloodstreams- we would WIN votes. And Gun Control is an area where, for some reason, many people seem to think the Democratic party is out to take their guns away; even though that's not true, the issue is a proven loser for us.
We stand up for the rights of individuals, the Constitution, choice and personal freedom, and we WIN. That's my opinion.
| 195. Best post in this thread. We could be strategizing and pressuring our candidates to PROGRESS |
This is SUCH a once in a lifetime opportunity for open government and re-prioritizing what security means. What freedom of individuals and collective support mean. NO drug war. Healthcare for ALL. BIG ISSUES.
But instead...this. GOP will attack our candidates? Shocking revelation. So let us spend our time practicing that.
At least Nero got some music out, eh?
| 206. That's right. Draw a distinction- personal freedom & strong social safety net |
versus theocracy and NO social safety net.
| 207. Eggsactly. A formula to totally REDRAW the lines and smash old stereotypes |
IN a way, this a form of "triangulation" - that is, the GOOD kind. It could capture many votes in the "don't tread on me" branch of GOP/Libertarians, who are very dissaffected right now - as well as many non-voters, who need clear distinctions to be drawn... NOW is a perfect time for that, too.
Sadly, we are missing a golden opportunity.
| 126. Oh, I totally agree with the "looks" deal! |
A big part of what we do where I work is media training. Hillary has one of the best media trainers ever. You have to think in terms of numbers... the average and below average thinkers in America are going to go for the visceral, brain stem, knee-jerk reaction they have to the way a candidate looks, walks and talks. What they have to say is of little concern, sadly.
Unfortunately, here at DU as of late, you must tell people exactly what you are thinking. There's a lot of mind-reading and shark jumping around here. Sheesh.
| 111. To be fair to the OP, I bet there will be a lot of people who will decide against Obama based on |
just those kinds of nuances. It's sad; we should really be looking at platforms and plans, but so many people "go with their gut", their unconscious perceptions. Al Gore had that problem: people figured he was a nerdy "know-it-all", condescending to the voter. Now that he is a superhero (grin ) we should never forget how he was perceived by the common person during the 2000 election. I am hoping Obama doesn't get judged on small nuances, but, unfortunately, that seems to be how politics works. And I do agree with the person who said "uppity" indicating that racism may play a part in how Obama's look is perceived. A white male has a sense of entitlement and is allowed to have it, up to a point (see Al Gore). But a black man is still expected by some in this country not to act entitled. And women are expected NEVER to feel entitled to anything, not even their own bodies. Hillary and Obama are both working against this perception that women and blacks are not to act entitled about anything substantial or meaningful.
| 117. Now wht couldn't I say it with such eloquence? |
| 127. You probably said something completely different because |
you intended to say something completely different. You can say "oh, I meant THE REPUBLCIANS WILL SMAER HIM" all you want, but people aren't buying it because that doesn't fit the OP. The OP was pretty clearly, "Obama makes me feel icky, and Hillary makes me feel cozy."
The message was the same. It just didn't give the detail.
| 134. Where was the OP alluding to Republicans? |
"I can't stand Obama. I feel all icky looking at Obama. Hillary reminds me of my grandma. Hillary is my 44."
Which of those had anything to do about the election, the Republicans, or absolutely anything but the OP's personal disgust with Obama / warm fuzzies towards Clinton?

Or "But he's black- a lot of people won't vote for a black man".
You know who a lot of non-thinking Republicans, independents and Limbaugh listeners would sooner gnaw off their own feet than vote for? Hillary.
So big fucking deal. Yes, I'll support the nominee, too. Which is why I want the best person with the best platform and approach to the issues to win. We tried to out-guess and out-flank Rove in 2004, remember? John Kerry- with his vote for the IWR and his "War Hero" status- was "unassailable".. remember?
In retrospect, I think we would have done better with Dean.
So I say vote for the one you like, not the one you think is "impervious to attack".
| 198. I didn't support Kerry for his "unassailability" but for his platform and experience. |
The foreign policy experience, knowing the BFEE like NOBODY else (Iran-contra, BCCI) and a GREAT environmental record. All of these and more were the reasons - he was far above the competition in those areas, and THAT is why I supported him.
So, we disagree. BUT I disagree with you RESPECTFULLY.
And I fully support Howard Dean, and he has done a GREAT job at DNC. He may have been a better candidate, or not. We came REALLY close, if not for the shenanigans, and the betrayals. The media wanted to destroy Dean AND Kerry, and boy did they do their part.
See how we could keep it civil, and not destroy what common ground we have? I prefer that.
RESPECT to you, Impeachdubya.

| 121. Unconvincing, to say the least. |

Since you're just copy-pasting, I will too:
You say, "LOL OMBAMA LOOKS DUMB. HILLARY LOOKS NICE. NOT LIKE DUMB OBAMA." Everyone else goes, "WTF that's stupid. Nobody will be convinced by that shit." You say, "THE REPUBLICANS ARE GONING TO SAY OBAMA LOOKS DUMB! THAT IS MY PIONT!!!!!" To which I now reply, "Good. It'll work about as well as it did for you in this thread."

You got caught out there saying something incredibly stupid and now you're backtracking. That's obvious enough.
Your stated reason for the post, moreover, is not shallow, but ridiculously elitist. People generally vote for real reasons, even when we disagree with that vote. "Rove has planned..." Yeeesh.
You're no "democrat" either way, with your initial dumb post or your made up excuse for it.
| 132. Which is rather ironic. |
"And if there's one thing that the low-class idiots that make up the voting population can't stand, it's someone who acts like he's better than them. So we should please those moronic mouthbreathers, and not go for an elitist like that Obama."
Yes, the rather embarrassing consequence of the made-up contrivance defending the OP. Well put.
| 149. we can't defend free speach among Democrats |
| 153. The right to free speech does not entail the right to an appreciative audience. As Voltaire said, |
"I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. Mostly so everyone can listen and laugh at how stupid it is."
People are still free to critique your speech for ridiculous assumptions and open contradictions. Free speech does not equal free pass.
| 171. and no free pass is asked for |
| 179. Then your free speech post makes no sense at all |
Edited on Fri Dec-14-07 06:54 PM by alcibiades_mystery

5'5" and has to look up to everybody, doesn't mean he won't make a great president!! Just remember: Alan Ladd had to stand on a box through many of HIS movies, and have his leading women walk down trenches to make them shorter than he was! (PS: This is supposed to be funny. If you are offended by short jokes, I don't care: I get them aimed at me every day at 5.75')
| 160. I resemble that remark |
I'm 5.8 and had to look down at Edwards
I WISH I were 5.75'!! I forgot a 0 in there someplace: I'm 5' and 3/4"--not even a good 5'1"! I always say I'm 5'1 1/2" though--sounds more impressive than saying I'm a 1/4 shy of an extra inch!!

The last thing I thought I'd be doing when I dragged my (5'7") carcass off the couch this morning is channeling Randy Newman. Ya just never know... Hey, but at least neither of them are MIMES! (Although I think that'd be a refreshing debate format -- "Senator Biden, please explain your program for middle-east demilitarization. And remember, you may not use words in doing so.")

Do you know what the Republicans will do with his boogers in the fall? They'll smear them--that's what they'll do.
| 167. Both pics are prerferable to this one: |

I will be happy to be able to look at either of them. It will mean I'm looking at a Dem President. It will bring me unbridled joy.
| 169. well said and thank you |
| 174. Obama seems really stiff and dry to me -not relaxed and engaging like JFK |
Maybe he'll loosen up over time. Still, he's my preferred candidate among the big three. I like him, but I still can pick on minor things that sort of bug me.
Your grandma is older than Hillary. Quit being an ass.

Sometimes I do wonder about the Hillary supporters. It's kinda reminds me of my mom and her back handed compliments, like "Your husband is not a wimp, he's just really nice." AT MY WEDDING. Thanks Mom.
I'm sure Grandma is not exactly the image the Hillary camp is looking for. Damn that Obama is snooty though heh? Again-are there really any Hillary supporters are all you guys punking us?
| 188. Of all the possible reasons for not wanting to support a candidate, |
this has to be the most utterly dumbass one ever.

| 190. Yea, well I'm voting for any one with a "D" after their name. |
| 191. Too cocky....assumes he will be coronated. |

| 197. Didn't some people say Kerry (another non-Clinton) looked elitist? |
Edited on Sat Dec-15-07 03:23 AM by Leopolds Ghost
Oops, I forgot, most Americans even DUers bought the koolaid on Kerry, he's persona non grata now. Damn liberal elitists! Didn't Clinton or someone once pride herself on eating at Applebees, and chastize Kerry/Edwards for not doing the same? Apparently right-thinking, public-safety-oriented "moderate Dems" are not elitists. They're not afraid to comfort us in our illusions on a variety of old wives tales ("issues") spoon fed us by the media. They have "the courage to be comforting and project a sense of strength." You will never look at them and god forbid get the impression that they know more than you do about anything. Whatever happened to the courage of convictions? "Down to earth" USED to mean unafraid to speak your mind. That, anyhow, was the Yankee esthetic. Now "down to earth" just means "one of us". "I feel comforted by him/her, not challenged." -- Always a bad sign.
| 200. wow, you really have substantive criteria for judging candidates |
