"If I Had A Hammer"
(Pete Seeger / Lee Hays)
If I had a hammer I'd hammer in the morning
I'd hammer in the evening all over this land
I'd hammer out danger, I'd hammer out warning
I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

If I had a bell I'd ring it in the morning
I'd ring it in the evening all over this land
I'd ring our danger, I'd ring out warning
I'd ring out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

If I had a song I'd sing it in the morning
I'd sing it in the evening all over this land
I'd sing out danger, I'd sing out warning
I'd sing out love between my sisters and my brothers
All over this land

When I've got a hammer, and I've got a bell
And I've got a song to sing all over this land
It's a hammer of justice, it's a bell of freedom
It's a song about love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

Most people probably are more familiar with
Peter, Paul and Mary performing this song.
Written in 1949, it was a Progressives' Protest song.
Anyone recall the Peekskill riots?

-Howard Fast, "I have included the above, with some small changes and deletions, not only because it deeply affected my own life and my thinking, but also because it illustrates how easily, when terror is unleashed in a nation, it can take hold, and how thin the line is that separates con- stitutional government from tyranny and dictatorship. What happened that night and what happened at the second Peekskill incident was the result of a demented campaign of anti-Communism, led by such men as Senator Joseph McCarthy, Roy Cohn, Richard Nixon, and John Rankin."

Sounds familiar. "terror unleashed
in a nation" Deja doo doo, we have seen this shit
before.

Lots of info at the link with a first hand report, take
note even then the media did the reporting with a bias.
Notice the oppression and fascist actions of the police.
Not much different than today. Cops just use tasers and
rubber bullets instead of saps and billy sticks.
The Peekskill Riots happened in 1949. The Progessive
fight has been going on for 58 years!!!!!

The question is, which of our candidates is the candidate
that will bring the 'hammer of justice' back to the Hill?
Who will ring the 'bell of freedom' again in America?

Vancouver Folk Felsivals. He and Utah Philips came shopping at our vendors booth. We make flutes and ocarninas. He chose an ocarina and told us that he learns a new instrument every year, and that OUR ocarina would be his instrument of that year. No higher honor have we had! He was amazing on stage, too! (I would have chosen from the harp maker next door had I been him.) hahhahaha

It is one of my favorite memories.

3. CD : Where Have All the Flowers Gone
Edited on Fri Dec-14-07 08:32 AM by Jim__
In 1998, the CD Where Have All the Flowers Gone was released. It's a double CD where various artists sing songs that were written/co-written by Pete Seeger. The last song on the album is sung by Pete, "And Still I Am Searching". I'm guessing that he was about 80 years old then, his voice is scratchy and just about gone, but he's still singing, still hoping, and still searching.

5. Saw him on a PBS
folk music special
recently. They featured
this song (from the OP) and the history
around it. It is amazing
the different artists that
have recorded it.
(I have the CD :) that you
mentioned)
