No, no. Not that Chavez. Martin Chavez who was running for the Senate in NM (he's a dem). This is excellent news for us, leaving progressive dem, Tom Udall without a real primary race. He's ahead of Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce by double digits already. This will only help him increase his lead. Say hello to the new Senator from NM.
According to a short press release, Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez is going to drop out of the race for US Senate. This leaves only Representative Tom Udall and alternative paper publisher Leland Lehrman in the race; even with Chavez in the race, Udall was the prohibitive favorite.
Chavez was far behind Udall in both the polls and fundraising. His early, constant attacks on Udall's record apparently did not make a dent in the Udall lead in either category, causing Chavez to drop out even before Christmas. Chavez seemed to acknowledge the allegations that he was only staying in the race to sabotage Udall's general election chances in his press release.

As importantly, Chavez pledged his support for Tom Udall and "encourages the support of all New Mexicans" for the Udall campaign. On the Republican side of things, Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce are both still in the race, and will have a hotly contested primary.
