The Human Behavior Experiments
2006 66 mins Color
Alex Gibney, Director

Documentarian Alex Gibney (ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM) revisits three famous behavioral studies to explore some perennial questions about why human beings commit unethical acts under particular social conditions. Reconsidered are Stanley Milgram’s obedience to authority experiments, in which subjects willingly inflicted pain on another person; Philip Zimbardo’s alarming prisoner and guard role-playing study; and Columbia University’s 1969 experiments which illuminated how being in a group can cause a diffusion of moral responsibility.

1. If this is the one
that I have seen good luck watching it (I can't watch the clips to see). It gave me actual nightmares for months. I would wake up sweating and gasping for breath. It is very interesting but also just damned disturbing.

4. Wish I got the Sundance Channel.
If I remember, the experiments basically showed that humans are neither inherently good or bad, but strongly determined by the situations and norms they encounter. A few people with great sense of self belief can overcome the normalizing of evil, but most of us will succumb.

It's one reason why I hate reality shows. People are rewarded for being asswipes.
