1. If you know what he knows, you wouldn't either...
I've heard it said - Rome wasn't built in a day- but did Rome fall apart in a day?

He compares the US to the Roman Empire and the demise of said Empire.

3. And Rome didn't even exist in the modern digital economy
As he pointed out in the older interview they played right before this, the dollar's dependence on the kindness of foreign governments is the kind of thing that literally bankrupt us overnight.

7. You might be able to watching it streaming online
It's not available yet, but this site might have it in the future: http://www.booktv.org/watch/

And for folks with tv access, it looks like the http://www.booktv.org/General/index.asp?segID=7964&schedID=476">next replay is at midnight EST tonight. Hopefully you're either night owl or have Tivo, because it was a great interview.

The overall gist of is was that we, as nation, are approaching an economic tipping-point where we are no longer able to finance our military presence around the globe. At one point he mentioned how, if we crash economically, there will probably be a severe recession for a year or so, at which point the rest of the world would move on while we linger in an economic haze for considerably longer. While he didn't think that would necessarily be the worst thing in world to have happen, I'm far more concerned about what could happen at that point if the Bushies are in charge at that point. Then again, I also have strong suspicions that bankrupting and destroying this country has been part of the agenda of the far-Rightists that have taken over the GOP in the past couple of decades. Here's an interesting Dave Emory show that discusses how the French elites welcomed Nazi Germany's invasion and the set up of the Vichy government, because they preferred German fascist rule over the democratic rule of the French public: http://wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=7989">FTR 412 -The Engineer Intends To Wreck The Train.

There is a very real possibility that something like this is in the cards for us :-(

Although the entire show starts off with an interview of conservative UK historian http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Roberts">Andrew Roberts...I'm not sure when Chalmers starts.
