Belleville considers banning clothing donation boxes

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - The metro East community of Belleville may ban outdoor clothing donation boxes amid growing complaints from residents that the boxes aren't well kept and aren't helping local charities.

A city committee recommended removing the boxes, but Mayor Mark Eckert is asking city leaders to postpone drafting an ordinance banning the boxes until January when he has a time to meet with area clergy.

Residents have complained items are stolen from the boxes or discarded around them.

Officials say they may consider licensing the donation sites to prevent for-profit companies from erecting the boxes.
