Laura Bush Shows Off Her Home

By JURA KONCIUS
The Washington Post
February 15, 2007

WASHINGTON — It's legacy time inside the Bush White House.

On a blustery winter afternoon last week, Laura Bush ushered a reporter and photographer through the newly redecorated Lincoln Bedroom and Sitting Room, the nation's most historic A-list guest accommodations.

For 30 minutes, a relaxed and chatty first lady padded across the diamond-grid English Wilton carpet that now links the adjoining rooms, pointing out the pair of 1860 John Henry Belter sofas donated by the Winterthur Museum and a Haviland & Co. porcelain fruit basket from the Lincoln china.

"I love houses and history," Mrs. Bush said as she led the way in her leopard-print ballet flats past the famous Lincoln bed, now topped with a gilded corona that replicates the one she said was "discarded" by the Coolidges.

snip

It was, instead, a quiet glimpse into the upstairs rooms of the Bush White House during a presidency mired in an unpopular war and dogged by sinking approval ratings. But events of state don't stop the constant swatching and swagging that goes on in a 207-year-old house with 100 rooms and 35 bathrooms.

1. She is SO on drugs.
I can't think of another explanation for her blissful disconnect.

2. Who knows if there's a disconnect?
She may scream in private.

On the other hand, she's had a weird life. She killed her boyfriend as a teenager, was accused by half the town of doing it deliberately or at least wrecklessly, she married an alcoholic drug addict--one can't imagine that a husband who was drunk and coked up until he was forty was a perfect gentleman to her or the kids... She may not have been sober in a few decades. If she is, the mind may have checked out long ago. Who can tell, there's no connection to between reality and what we hear about what goes on with that family.

All I know is the kids keep their distance from dear old daddy, and I suspect the reasons aren't pretty.

to be pro-choice.

9. You forgot her Mother-In-Law and Poppy.
The elder Bushes would be enough to drive anyone to desperation. The worst power couple since the Macbeths. That said, those bratty twins of George & Laura's should be enlisting and off to Iraq presto --- and no cushy Green Zone post. Right to the most dangerous Front Line, baby. The Bushes are sure willing to ship other peoples' children off to death, maiming and mental anguish.

11. I don't think the twins should go to Iraq.
I think every other American should come home.

3. If Laura love houses and history
Why did she let her husband obliterate so many houses in Iraq and let the looters destroy history which was stored in the Iraqi museums.

8. Nobody ever told her . . .
. . . (or any of the neocons, for that matter), that other cultures actually have museums.

Welcome to DU!

John Henry Belter just rolled over in his grave.

19. Also, why did her husband allow so many homes
to be destroyed in New Orleans? Why hasn't she been on the front lines demanding that the people who lived in those homes be allowed to return to them?

4. "as she led the way in her leopard-print ballet flats"
I know very, very little about fasion, so I may be way off here, but isn't that just a little informal for giving someone a tour of the WH?

Was she wearing a bathrobe too?

Precancer cells and 'barnacles of old age' removed from Bush's face

12. She restored the "crown" over the bed
"The pièce de résistance, both decoratively and symbolically, will be a carved bed canopy in the shape of a crown. It too has been sent for gilding. When affixed to the ceiling, the crown will support yards of regal purple satin over white lace, both trailing to the floor."

13. Yep
Nice subtle jab there, eh?

The Restoration of the pResident as KING.

Saw this one coming a long time ago..

God, let this ignorant biddy spend Hundreds of thousands, just so she can Xanax out and sneak off to smoke in that House, the people's House, and in less than two years someone else gets to do it all over again..

Trash, White trash, and all they'll ever be. Wonder how she looks with Paraguayan Prints on, surrounded by OUR Army for Life, since Bush won't just have SS agents for life, but a Whole fucking DIVISION at his disposal, the most hated man in the world.

20. So Lincoln never slept in the bed or even in the room.
Why has this room become sacrosanct? What does it matter who sleeps in it or why?
