During the November 28 CNN special Campaign Killers: Why Do Negative Ads Work?, CNN anchor Campbell Brown said: "General David Petraeus made his reputation taking on insurgents in Iraq. But when he came to Capitol Hill in September, he was confronted by American insurgents, a liberal anti-war group called MoveOn.org."

Brown also asserted that a MoveOn.org advertisement headlined "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?" "became a huge news story because it questioned the loyalty of a wartime commander, implying he was a traitor." In asserting that the content of the advertisement generated news coverage, Brown did not point out the claim by many commentators that the ad "became a huge news story" because Republicans preferred to talk about it rather than Petraeus' testimony before Congress about the situation in Iraq:

The Democrats should have smacked her down rigorously at the last CNN Democratic debate. Brown had the debate's first question, and it was nothing more than a thinly disguised GOP talking point. I believe it was addressed to Senator Clinton. She should have started her answer with:

Now hold it right there, Campbell. Why are you asking me a question that sounds as if it came straight from Karl Rove's Blackberry? Is this the way it's going to play out tonight, Campbell? Questions that are designed to put the Democratic party in the most negative light possible? I'm here to talk about real health care for every American. I'm here to talk about how our party is going to reverse this president's catastrophic foreign policy. I'm here to talk about reversing the economic devastation that is shrinking the middle class. I'm here to talk about putting the greedheads behind the mortgage meltdown on a short leash -- and making them pay for selling working families short. So let's start again, Campbell -- but this time, ask me a question that's relevant to the majority of Americans, not some question that makes you look like a dupe for the Republican National Committee.
