Spotted in Virginia Today: Hillary Rodham Carpetbagger Bumper Sticker
Edited on Mon Nov-26-07 06:23 PM by CorpGovActivist
The http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=hillary+rodham+carpetbagger">"carpetbagger" meme still resonates in the South and in Upper Appalachian/border states.

In the state (or Commonwealth) that:

1. Has given America the most Presidents of any state;

2. Pulled those loud-mouthed Bostonians' chestnuts out of the fire during the Revolution, after they started a fight they couldn't finish; and

3. Has http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=virginia+most+vanity+license+plates">the most personalized license plates of any other ...

... bumper sticker watching is a bit of a spectator sport.

That one gets at least four messages across in three words.

- Dave

On edit: Because Northern Virginia also has a heavy concentration of think tanks, campaign organizations, and issues groups headquartered here (or in neighboring DC or MD), our bumper sticker crop is always a - well, a bumper crop. Sightings here are often seen soon afterwards out on the campaign trail.

5. Point Us to Some Polls?
Here are some national numbers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_for_the_United_States_presidential_election%2C_2008

If you've got Virginia-only matchup data to share, I'd love to see it.

15. Some of the Most Effective Memes...
... are the softer ones, like the one in the OP.

What groups that HRC once was affiliated with could possibly emerge to "swiftboat" her?

Or isn't that done in the South?

PS: New York Republicans already tried "carpetbagger" on Hillary. Didn't work.

27. Also this logic should be applied as well.
is this a bumper sticker you would expect to find on a Democrats car? I am guessing no, that being said I have to give the OP props for spreading the right wing propaganda and bumper sticker lines for them. Well done.

29. Where in WV?
Raleigh County, born and bred, here.

As for spreading the meme - far better to know the tactics of the opposition, air them for discussion, and come up with countermeasures.

18. I'm familiar.
The implication of Hillary Clinton Carpetbagger is that she's just one more Northern opportunist come to take advantage of the South. By which I assume is meant that only a Southerner is acceptable to a Southern voter. Is Giuliani NOT a carpetbagger? Romney?

Or does the South give the word some extra special meaning that has eluded the dictionaries and history books?

22. The bumper sticker may be referring to her Senate run
If so, it wouldn't be particularly relevant to her Presidential run. But I think the "carpetbagger" reference may simply refer to her move to NY to run for the Senate when she was originally from AR. The meaning of carpetbagger has widened to refer to any politician who moves to a different place to seek political office; it doesn't simply refer to Northerners going to the South anymore. This is the second definition from the American Heritage dictionary:

2. An outsider, especially a politician, who presumptuously seeks a position or success in a new locality.

23. Might be. Silly to reference a ploy that failed, though.
What I don't understand is why anyone here thought "carpetbagger" some obscure term.
