~snip~ Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf, under pressure to end a state of emergency that critics say he is using to keep his grip on power, is to quit as army chief and take an oath of office for a third presidential term on Thursday.

2. Headline in the paper today says . . .
Nawaz Sharif, former prime minister of Pakistan, has returned to the country. He's the guy who was in office in 1999 when Musharraf took over, and has spent the intervening years living in Saudi Arabia. I wonder what this new development means? Would the Saudis have allowed Sharif to return to Pakistan if they really liked Dubya's great and good friend Musharraf? Is this a way of dividing the opposition to Musharraf so that it doesn't coalesce behind Bhutto?

Something major is developing in Pakistan; I don't suppose I should hold my breath looking for the major U.S. media outlets to give us a heads-up?

3. Well, that makes me feel MUCH better...
And I'm sure Musharraf's ties to the military will be completely severed.

4. HEADLINE--Musharraf Continues to Stand For Democracy, Has Not Crossed The Line --Bush
I guess you can only 'save' democracy by snuffing out every aspect of its existence.

Uniform or not, it is the military that makes it possible for Musharraf to stay in power.
